Haven’t you always wished that there was a field day in the Fall?  A chance to come hang out with your kids, their teachers, and fellow parents and enjoy the changing leaves around campus?  Us too!  So we decided to make it happen with Fall Family Fest.  The WCDS Inaugural Fall Family Fest will be held on October 31st from 1:20-3:00 for 2nd-8th grades.

After lunch, children can change into costumes before boarding a bus to our Wheeling Park Branch Campus. If your child can wear their costume to school without distracting their learning, they are welcome to wear it in the morning. We will do two bus trips to transport the children to the park. Parents, please join us for an afternoon of fun at the middle school branch campus anytime after 1:00.  We will begin our parade around the pool as soon as the children arrive at the park led by our grand marshal’s Ms. H and Maddie Kirchner, the winner of the Grand Marshal auction prize. Then, the children will rotate through different stations with their classmates.

  • Students began their review on multiplication and will be entering the world of multiplying decimals next week.
  • Make sure everyone is practicing multiplication fluency regularly!
  • Google Classroom has links to various online resources and “games” that have students practicing multiplication and our academic current skills from various subjects. Encourage your child to play these practice games in the evenings in lieu of other, less productive, video games.

Language Arts:

  • Students continued writing their memoirs.
  • Our Andrew Clements literature circle groups are finishing their stories this week. Be on the lookout for upcoming slideshow presentations!
  • New spelling and vocabulary words were introduced this week with a test on October 20th.

Creek Side Deep Dive:

As the warm temperatures fade, we transitioned into the classroom for a little chemistry! What really is a water droplet? Students were introduced to atoms and molecules. To help visualize a molecule, we built H2O models using marshmallows and gummies. Students traveled the water cycle as if they were a water molecule. They rolled a dice to see where they traveled next. At each stop a bead was added to a bracelet or keychain to document their individual journey.

Playgrounds and Parks Deep Dive:

Learning formulas within Google Sheets and finalizing graphs is how the class spent Wednesday. We’re ready to begin presentations on Monday in which peer evaluations will be given and rubrics will be used to assess. Look for presentations to take both days next week.

Our fifth grade campus leaders had their first shift as interns! On Fridays from 12:45 -1:30 pm, the students will be at their assigned job to help and assist faculty members at WCDS. They were so excited to begin their new jobs, and had nothing but wonderful things to say when they returned. Next Friday’s internship is already a topic of conversation amongst the group!
