Our week started at our West Virginia Northern Classroom. The students were excited to have a change of scenery and loved the vibe of our satellite classroom. Our visit with Councilwoman Rosemary Ketchum was a treat. She spent over an hour with us talking about the Wheeling government and different ways to make productive changes around the city. On Tuesday, we were treated again with a visit from the Vice Mayor, Chad Thalman, right here in our classroom! He presented the class with a certificate for their innovative ideas and creative thinking to make Wheeling a better place for all. The kids were fully engaged and excited to learn from Rosemary and Chad. Thank you to Avery’s mom, Jill Holloway, for helping to make these visits happen!

We finished up our unit on subtraction this week. We’ll continue to give them practice on the skills covered involving addition and subtraction while we move on to multiplication. The students were challenged to complete 100 multiplication facts with accuracy and speed. They aimed to complete a second sheet of facts with a better time. They all felt great when they achieved their goal! Please continue to have them practice their facts for at least 10 minutes daily.

We are preparing to end our novel study of “Holes” next week. This week was filled with focused lessons on each literary circle job to ensure deep understanding of the skill and expectations. Students learned how to summarize a chapter in twenty words or less (or for $2.00), make personal connections to the text, and identify character traits with text evidence. Stay tuned for their final project which will encompass all of these skills as well as STEAM skills.

WCDS’ Inaugural Fall Family Fest!

October 31st – Fall Family Fest: Haven’t you always wished that there was a field day in the Fall?  A chance to come hang out with your kids, their teachers, and fellow parents and enjoy the changing leaves around campus?  Us too!  So we decided to make it happen with Fall Family Fest.  The WCDS Inaugural Fall Family Fest will be held on October 31st from 1:20-3:00 for 2nd-8th grades.

After lunch, children can change into costumes before boarding a bus to our Wheeling Park Branch Campus. If your child can wear their costume to school without distracting their learning, they are welcome to wear it in the morning. We will do two bus trips to transport the children to the park. Parents, please join us for an afternoon of fun at the middle school branch campus anytime after 1:00.  We will begin our parade around the pool as soon as the children arrive at the park led by our grand marshal’s Ms. H and Maddie Kirchner, the winner of the Grand Marshal auction prize. Then, the children will rotate through different stations with their classmates.

We hope you have a fun-filled weekend!
