6th Grade News 10/30/23

Important Dates and Reminders:

Tuesday, October 31st – Fall Family Fest: Haven’t you always wished that there was a field day in the Fall?  A chance to come hang out with your kids, their teachers, and fellow parents and enjoy the changing leaves around campus?  Us too!  So we decided to make it happen with Fall Family Fest.  The WCDS Inaugural Fall Family Fest will be held on October 31st from 1:20-3:00 for 2nd-8th grades.

After lunch, children can change into costumes before the festivities begin. Parents, please join us for an afternoon of fun at the middle school branch campus anytime after 1:00.  We will begin our parade around the pool as soon as the children arrive at the park led by our grand marshals Ms. H and Maddie Kirchner, the winner of the Grand Marshal auction prize. Then, the children will rotate through different stations with their classmates.

  • English w/ Mrs. McFadden- We began reading “Walk Two Moons” last week. This book has a wealth of vocabulary words, and we found different ways to practice each day. We had a vocabulary hunt/race around the room, created skits to teach our peers new words and made word association webs to help bring these words to life.
  • Fundamentals of Pre-Algebra w/ Mrs. Murray-This week we began working on long division with decimals.  This should be a review for the class.  I do generally give homework Monday through Thursday evening, with some time to get started in class.  I post the assignments daily on google classroom, so feel free to follow up with the students.  I’ve been trying to really keep them accountable with frequent workbook checks in order to keep them from falling behind, and I appreciate any help you are able to offer to keep them on task.  Even just a gentle reminder is often enough.  Working for fifteen minutes or so is enough, and if the pages are not completed in that time, that is OK.  Thanks for your support.  We finished the week with some word problem challenges in small groups.
  • Music w/ Mrs. Chelsey – Continuing our work as an ensemble, students picked up the ukuleles this week! We started learning “Silent Night” with chords C and G. We will also be adding in keyboards, hand drums and voices, so everyone will be contributing on an instrument. I hope to be able to have the kids perform this at the christmas show in December!! **I am also looking to borrow a few electric keyboards (with stands) starting next week, so if you have one we could use, please feel free to bring it to middle school next week! Thank you!
