Welcome back! We hope your Thanksgiving was full of food, family, and many new memories.

This week in reading, we started our novel study of “The Family Under the Bridge.” We dove into the setting of the story, which takes place in Paris, France. Students have been intrigued and excited by the architecture and history of the city. If any of you have visited and would like to share pictures or information, please send them our way!

In writing, students started to learn about persuasive writing (just in time for those Christmas lists.) Students listened to a story about a dog who is trying to convince people in his neighborhood to adopt him. We talked about how he gave reasons and had a goal in mind. Then we dove into a short essay and dissected the different ways another author tried to persuade us that graffiti is art instead of crime.

Class flocks have united! A crest of each group has been made into a button to represent – WCDS, deep dive, flock name, and their group’s values. One group portrayed a shield to protect ourselves from salmonella when handling eggs and chicks. Our first lab led us to make predictions of the egg’s size. We took measurements using a measuring tape, a spring scale, and graduated cylinders. We are off to an EGG-traordinary start!

The students started another math project this week. They’ve been working on 2-digit times 2-digit multiplication problems and are using this skill to break out of an escape room. They are really starting to get the hang of the process. We’ll finish up December with one more math project before we head to our holiday break.

During Innovations, students created their draft of the tablets they will craft next week. They were inspired by the early languages of the world and how humans often communicated through pictures. Some drew while others created their own language that they carved into a clay tablet.
