Language Arts

  • Persuasive essay writing on why we would make the best elf in the North Pole
  • Independent reading book reports are due before break
  • Began a daily rotation for reading lessons where students work on various reading styles which including reading to friends, reading to self, and listening to short stories.

Our week of math consisted of two digit divisors and working toward a decimal in the quotient rather than a remainder. Students are being immersed in great fact fluency while also being forced to estimate and reason with numbers. Look for work with order of operations to pick up after the break

Lego Robotics:

Recruiting Coaches!? Creating Logos!? Designing competition challenges!? The list goes on and on. The class had made great strides in the preliminary stages and look for us to return from the holiday break ready to build, program and excel with the robots.

This week’s DARE topic was stress. Officer John talked to the children about what they could do to help themselves when they feel stressed. Here are some of his suggestions. 1) Count to 5 and slow things down. 2) Walk away from the situation to give yourself time to calm down. 3) Tell yourself you can do it (positive self-talk).  4) Put your head down on the desk.

Weekly Recap

On Tuesday of this week, Mrs. Theresa Cowchek visited our class with her friend, Said Leghlid, a professor at West Virginia Northern Community College. With the help of Mrs. Angela McAteer, teacher of our Language and Culture class, our fifth grade has met and partnered with a fifth grade class in Morocco! Theresa and Said will be flying to this school in Morocco the day after Christmas, and will be not only introducing them to the work that Edge does, but they will be delivering some gifts our class made for them! Look for information soon about another live Zoom with their class when Theresa delivers their gifts!

Friday was a full day in fifth grade! Ms Stephanie visited the class with a group of holiday filled we two students ready to take a visit to the North Pole with their own personal elves! These kiddos did a phenomenal job representing WCDS while supporting and nurturing the younger children. To cap it all off, we took our annual hike across the street to TJ’s and had a wonderful family lunch. We’d be out of element if we didn’t mention the arcade games, duh! We walked back from TJ’s to a full dress rehearsal, with microphones, as we continued to prepare for our holiday show. It was a whirlwind of a week.
