This week we seperated as a class to join new teachers and friends for literature circles. After the first day, many students came back and said how much fun they had had. Each student has a folder with their literature circle assignments. Please check in with them to make sure they are keeping up with the readings and any other work in that folder.

In writing, we are starting to draft our contest entries for the, “When I Grow Up Smart529” writing contest. Students will submit these and have a chance at winning scholarship money. We are excited to read about what career excites them and how they want to use it to help others.

In Innovations, students talked about the pinwheel. They discussed the importance of wind power and how it came to be. Students discussed real-world examples and where you can often find them. They highlighted windmills specifically and talked about how they create energy through wind.  They even made their own (much smaller) prototypes!

The eggs have arrived! Our three-week countdown has begun and look for the chicks to hatch on February 2! This week the students learned more about oviparous animals – those who lay eggs. We created riddles of “guess what animal” style and will be sharing next week. We also incorporated math into our unit by discussing the fractions and or ratios of hatched eggs to quitters along the way.

The students are enjoying “ordering” off a menu during our math class. We’ve been working with money, using addition and subtraction. We’ll continue this skill while reviewing multiplication and other skills necessary for the long division process.

  • The students have an early dismissal at 11:30 AM on Friday, January 26. If your child will be in aftercare, please send a packed lunch (school lunch will not be available). Aftercare is available until 3:00 PM that day.
  • The temperatures outside are going to drop next week!! Please have your child dress appropriately with layers and a winter coat, hat, gloves, scarves, etc. We will be outside for a safe amount of time throughout the days. Also, please label everything with your child’s name. Is your child missing an item? Check out the lost and found table in the gym. We are accumulating quite a collection of items!

Have a great weekend!
