Dear Middle School Families,

I am reaching out to let you know that we will be starting our swim season on Tuesday, February 26 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Wheeling Park High School Pool, fifth grade included.  This year, Wheeling Park High School has allowed us to use their pool on Mondays and Thursdays from 6pm – 8pm.  We are going to have two coaches this year.  Airry Schultz, who was our coach our first year at WCDS will return to the team this year along side Jade Miller, who is a student athlete at Wheeling University and helped out Coach Meredith the last few years.  We will be participating again this year in the middle school swim league that takes place on Saturday’s at Linsly.   If your son/daughter would like to participate, please have them tell me or you are more than welcome to send me an email.

Thanks, Carrie Ochap

Dear 5th Grade Families,

This is the time of year that I invite the 5th graders to shadow at the middle school.  We ask if this is something that you are interested in, to reach out to me and we will set up a day for them to visit and shadow a current 6th grade student.  This will allow them to see just what a day in the life of a 6th grader actually looks like at the middle school.  They are permitted to come with one other classmate if they wish to make the transition more comfortable.  We will begin visits after spring break, so please don’t hesitate to reach out and secure your spot.  I ask that the visits take place on a Tuesday or Thursday so that they are able to experience our deep dive and our science class.  If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

The 5th grade began “Self Control Boot Camp” this week. As we really start to hone in on what their next few years will look like in middle school, we worked together to identify areas of improvement as they learn to lead and grow as individuals. Students reflected on what areas of their life they struggle to control, and how this plays a part in their daily lives. Look for their reflections to come home in their yellow folder and use this as a great conversation starter. How did they grade themselves on their self control assessment? Could they name and identify where they struggle to control themselves in school? Are they able to reflect on their own personal behaviors? What is their plan to help themselves move forward?
