Hello 3rd Grade!

In math we continued working with fractions. Students drew models to compare and used several other resources to discover more equivalent fractions. We even enhanced their learning with a new type of manipulative known as “railroad track” fractions. Ask your kiddo to describe this cool fraction tool! Phonics this week consisted of the suffix /-ness/. Their hard work when reading, writing, and spelling with this suffix was no less than shy of greatNESS! In reading, students finished their literature circles. The Third Grade Angels have all but completed the book and will save the last chapter for next week…it’s a Surprise! Seven students finished their trek on the Oregon Trail with Ranger, while Five students came down from their chocolate fever, and six kiddos learned how to pay attention to detail with their pal Clementine! Meanwhile in writing, students continued their research project. This week we learned about chapters. This is also known as what three main topics he/she wants to focus on.

During our geology deep dive, students learned that there was once a supercontinent called Pangaea. As earth’s plates shifted, Pangaea split into two and then eventually seven major land masses. We played a game to identify and then label the seven continents. Students embarked on a quick scavenger hunt to discover more about culture. We talked about music, arts & crafts, and of course food! See if your kiddo can tell you which food was created to satisfy the needs of hungry coal miners!
