  • September 3 – Delayed Start – 10:00 am
  • September 20 – Early Dismissal – 11:30 am.
  • September 21 – Boots for Buses Event! More details below.

Please ensure that you email or message both Mrs. Kramer and Mrs. Wallace when communicating absences or important information. We can be reached at kwallace@wcdsedu.com and kkramer@wcdsedu.com.

Fifth grade students are required to bring their computer, fully charged, and headphones, each day. Cell phones must remain in backpacks and turned off throughout the school day. Cell phones will not be accepted as a substitute for an uncharged computer. Smart Watches can be worn but will not be used for texting. It is recommended that Smart Watches be placed in Schooltime mode. If there is a change to your child’s schedule and they need to be informed, please message the teachers or call the main office.

Attention Parents: This year’s fifth grade class will be utilizing a daily agenda. Students have been given a planner for 2024-2025 to track their nightly homework and assignments. We are working on this skill with the children and ask for your help in getting your child to create an evening routine that is effective for them. We hope that each night, students remove their planner AND yellow folder from their backpack. Any papers on the “Keep at Home” side of the folder should be taken out and once any homework is completed, we encourage students to cross it off in their planner. If there is no homework, you should see “no homework” written in the planner. The planner can be checked to see what homework they have due the next day or any upcoming assignments. We’ve also encouraged students to put their own athletics, travel, and event schedules in their planner!  Thank you for your on-going support with this essential life skill.

Country Roads: Boots for Buses

September 21, 2024  6pm-9pm

WCDS Main Campus

Join us for an evening of BBQ, Boots, and Boogyin’.  It’s the perfect chance for parents to mingle, get to know each other, and kick up their heels!

More details to come, so mark your calendars now.  Yee Haw!

This year, our fifth grade class is fortunate enough to have a student teacher from Bethany College. You may hear your children talk about Miss Lindsey Garrison. She was a camp counselor for WCDS this summer and will be in our classroom four days a week this semester and full time in 2025. If you get to see or meet Miss Lindsey, please give her a warm welcome!

Language Arts:

  • We reviewed summer reading, took a quiz, and got an award for completing a novel
  • Groups created a “Wild Robot” using everyday materials for a contest.
  • We wrote a summer memory postcard
  • Wrote a summer memory poem in our Language Arts notebook

Math:

  • Students began reviewing their multiplication fluency facts in preparation for their fifth grade year. This skill is essential as we progress into heavier topics. If this is an area in which your child struggles, please let us know. We would be more than happy to share resources you can use at home to help your child become fluent.
  • We started our review on place value and the various ways to identify and write numbers
  • Next week we will dive head first into the world of decimals!

Water Science:

  • Students set up creek-side deep dive folder where we will document our learning throughout this year.
  • Earthball toss led each student to share what they want to learn. We also discovered the majority of us “landed” in water. Why? Ask your child what percentage of the Earth is water!
  • We took a class pledge to ensure we remain safe and respectable while having fun learning! We already hit the creek catching several fish, a few crawdads, and a stonefly.

History:

  • Students reviewed their previous knowledge of US Presidents
  • Began an engaging discussion about our nations involvement in both World War I and World War II.
  • Throughout the entirety of this school year, every Monday and Wednesday our students will have an hour long History Deep Dive. We will cover various topics including geography, economics, immigration, civics, and West Virginia history.

Leadership:

This week, students worked to create a shared vision as a class for their fifth grade year. Students were tasked with identifying why they go to school and why it is important to help us prepare for the future. Once we brainstormed in groups, students drafted a statement for us to refer and reflect on throughout the course of the year. Their statement?

“You go to school so you can get somewhere in life so you can provide for your family because they provided you with happiness, love, food, and shelter.”

Later this year, we will begin our D.A.R.E unit with Officer John and also begin work on our resumes and conduct interviews for their fifth grade internships!

We are looking forward to a wonderful year with your children!
