Hello JK Families,

Even with a shortened week, our classroom was buzzing with all kinds of amazing exploring and learning. Our Daily Discovery time in the morning has quickly become the time when the students often find themselves greeted by interesting new materials. While the magnetic stones, “gum balls”, and wands have attracted quite the attention from the beginning, we have started adding new levels and dimensions to our Science Discovery center. Acrylic display shelves stacked in size order added height, while tap puck lights became the crown pleaser. “Ice cream, ice cream, come get your ice cream!” has been the chant as the 6 lights ( that most importantly change colors) become the flavors. Coconut, cherry, apple, blue raspberry, and of course vanilla have been the favorites and boy, are they delicious! Some of the students have also been bringing in found treasures from outside to add to the center. We love how their ability to observe and see the wonder in things goes beyond our classroom walls.

This week the class also continued their study of self-identity by taking a deeper look into one of the biggest influences on ourselves, our families. Todd Parr’s The Family Book, helped us see that families can come in many different sizes, shapes, and colors. We also discussed how preferences in choices of food, music, and activities make us unique but do not divide us or the love we share for each other. The students were invited to create a family portrait using white paper and bright markers. Here are some things that they were sharing:

“My daddy is tall. He goes up to the ceiling.” -Emma

“This is Mommy. This is me. This is Daddy. This is Olive. This is Charlie. This is Vegera.” – Hailey

“I have two baby kitties.”- Lola

“This is my dog. Her name is Rosie.”- Bria

“This is the castle we saw at Disney World.” -Noah

“I drew my mommy, my daddy, and my sister Audrey.” -Lucas

They then created a handmade frame for their printed family photo. After filling in colorful cardstock with oil pastels, intricately designed frames were made using various hole punches. Careful consideration was put into each punch and we cannot wait to have them on display for you. To finish off the week, we started to design our Boots for Buses cowboy boots that will be raffled off at the event. While discussing what we should do with the plain white boots, the students shared so many creative ideas! Miss Liz shared her expertise about the color wheel and the students tried their hand at mixing lots of different colors. We won’t give anything away about our boots, but just know that they will have lots of color and lots of texture!

We hope you have a great weekend!
