Happy Friday Third Grade!
Fall is truly upon us as we felt that familiar chill in the air this week. The beautiful sunshine kept us going as we moved through our four day week. In math, we finally got around to…rounding! Students learned how to head for the “hills” in order to help them round to the nearest ten. A “hill” is a visual representation of the spatial relationship between numbers. Ask your kiddo to show you how “hills” can help with rounding! In phonics this week, students focused on the /ew/ sound, dedicating their practice to reading, writing, and spelling with this phoneme. In reading, we’re on the brink of wrapping up our novel, Third Grade Angels—we’re aiming to finish it on Monday! Additionally, students were introduced to third-grade grammar concepts, learning about complete sentences and their essential components. Ask your child to explain what a subject and a predicate are; they’ve been exploring these fundamental elements of grammar! Our WV Studies deep dive allowed us to merge social studies with science as we discussed landforms, plants, and animals. The students were most interested to discover that WV has a state mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, and fish. Zoology dove deeper into the five classes of vertebrates. Students participated in a fun game of “I have, who has?” Each student read clues out loud from a picture card. Next, everyone else listened intently and determined if the animal on their own card fit the description of the clues.
