October 3rd, Save the Date for Grandparents’ Day!

We’ve all heard the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” right? Well, the same can be said for shapes. What might just be a simple circle or a square to one person could be something entirely different to someone else. A circle could be the center of a beautiful flower or even the smiling face of a best friend! The way these little minds transform ordinary shapes into extraordinary creations reminds us to always look a little deeper and see the potential in everything around us.

This week, we introduced the children to some familiar shapes and had a wonderful discussion about how they are formed, and how each side meets at a corner to create something new. We read The Wing on a Flea by Ed Emberley, which highlights how the world is filled with shapes of all sizes. It was truly magical to listen to each child create a story from just one shape. Could you take any shape and turn it into something? Sure, we all could. But these little thinkers see the world so creatively! For instance, while most might see a triangle as a house, one child imagined it as floating on an island! It was such a fun moment to share how differently we all perceive things.

We took our second trip to the classroom library, and the children were so excited to explore and read new stories. Their enthusiasm filled the room as they carefully selected books that sparked their interest. For the first time, we introduced a “Read to Self” series, where the kiddos practiced sitting quietly with their chosen books, engaging in independent reading while we took time to sit with them in small groups to help them read their readers. It was wonderful to see them taking pride in their reading time.

Also this week, Eileen’s mom, Kari, stopped by to volunteer at lunchtime and brought Eileen a plum as a special treat. It sparked so much curiosity from the kiddos! A few asked what it was and were eager to try it. Seeing their interest, Kari went to Jebbias the next day and brought in some green plums for everyone to taste.

It was a fun way for the children to try something new and is the start of a new series, “What will you try?” Kari’s family has a farm and is willing to bring in fruits and vegetables for the children to acquire a taste for! We are so thankful for this beautiful family partnership that came from a simple lunch conversation. This led to our next classroom study… FAMILIES!!! From the comments you all provided at the beginning of the year, the observations in the classroom, and a short conversation about what makes up a family we decided to dig deeper into each family. In the next couple of weeks, we would like to invite you to share your family treasures with us! This could be a family recipe, tradition, or simple story that you would like to share with us. More to come!!!

Have a great weekend
