Hello JK families,

Superheroes don’t always wear capes. Often, they walk among us in everyday attire, flying under the radar, and fooling everyone into thinking they are average. Their alter ego, often comes with a simple disguise such as a hat or a pair of glasses (think Clark Kent). Mr. Alex, our Drama teacher, embraced our study of superheroes by providing the children with superhero disguises. Each child came up with a silly disguise from his dress up box. Then, Mr. Alex played “superhero music” to signal that help was needed and it was time to transform into their superselves! They practiced shedding their costume and striking a heroic pose. It was priceless! But when it is time to save the day capes are needed, so this week the class continued working on their individual cape by adding marks and designs to the painted fabric. Superhero personas were also created, in miniature form, out of wooden peg people that are perfect for small world play. We also decided to relaunch their interest in beading and boxes in BIG ways! We created a giant collaborative beading station that the children build upon daily. Talk about strengthening your finger muscles for fine motor skills! Then the boxes from last week got a glow up- quite literally! Miss Claire brought in her cube, covered it in sheets and lit it with spotlights and flashlights. The glowing cube became a place for scary storytelling, shadow puppets and even a spot for superheroes to rescue friends inside from a fire.

With Special Person’s Day a week away, we took some time to talk about grandparents! We read The Truth About Grandparents by Elina Ellis. In the story, the narration paints grandparents in a serious light while the illustrations show the opposite. The children caught on quickly to the joke and couldn’t wait to share how they felt about these very important family members. They said grandparents are…

“Good love”- Emma

“Special”- Scarlett

“Handsome”- Kipton

“Family”- Mylah

They were then invited to draw sweet moments shared with these special people. Using crayons, they drew bike rides, hand holding, and playdates. Then they painted over their renderings with watercolors and marveled at how the wax from the crayons repelled the paint and how their water changed color every time they rinsed their brushes. We can’t wait to display their artwork on Special Person’s Day!

Lastly, letter Bb took center stage this week. The kiddos practiced the lines and curves of this letter and built word webs in their classroom groups. Dax and Wendell wanted to combine both webs to see how many words the entire class came up with. They were thrilled to discover they came up with 34 words, our highest word count yet!

Have a SUPER weekend,

Miss Liz and Miss Claire
