Middle School News:

Since we can’t use the skating rink while it is transitioning from the rollerblade surface to ice, we spent the afternoon enjoying the beautiful day. Half the class played soccer in the field, while the other half went to the playground. My dogs had the absolute best day playing with the kids, and I’m pretty sure the kids had a great day playing with them as well!

6th Grade Happenings:

Deep Dive w/ Mr. K & Mr. Rouse

  • Officer John visited and spoke with students about the potential dangers of technology and social media. He also spoke with them about the permanent nature of social media posts.
  • Students started researching facts to use in their identity piece of writing.

English w/ Mrs. McFadden

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes– Daily Dose Quiz Friday, October 18
  • Read Free Choice books and looked for figurative language. We found similes, imagery, onomatopoeia, and personification. Students are now attempting to use these literary devices in their paragraph-of-the-week assignments!

Math w/ Mrs. McFadden

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes– Chapter 3 progress check Tuesday, October 15
  • Reviewed all concepts learned thus far, both on paper and by playing a Gimkit.
  • Practiced dividing decimals by 10, 100, and 1,000. Began dividing decimals by whole numbers.

Science w/ Mrs. Farris

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes – No Tests or Quiz Scheduled
  • We began an experiment to determine the best growing medium—clay pellets, rock wool, or rice hulls. Students used “If…then…” statements to form their hypotheses on which medium would yield the best results.
  • Fall has arrived! As chlorophyll decreases in leaves, carotenoids and anthocyanins increase, producing fall colors. We defined these terms and collected leaves in the park for our journal.

Art w/ Mr. K

  • Students are working on creating a pumpkin-style character or a fall/Halloween card in art. They are working on shading with pencils, colored pencils, or watercolors. Some goals are to understand overlapping and perspective while creating an original piece.

Music w/Mrs. Chelsey –

  • This week we worked on putting our first holiday song the students have learned together with the background track. We will continue to practice this one, as we start our next song, “First Footsteps”,  which will incorporate singing and playing the glockenspiel.
  • Our music journal entry this week was “How does music help you connect with others?”

Elective

  • Coding – The students have been working on the coding website Code Monkey. Currently, they are writing text coding (as opposed to block coding). Next week, they will receive their Lego robotics kit and begin building their “mouse” for the Nutcracker ballet. A sign-up sheet for the ballet dates will be published soon.
