Shhh… What do you hear when you stop, look, and listen with your ears? Last week we took a short walk down near the creek to see what we could hear on campus. The students were surprised at all the small things they heard that they typically wouldn’t notice if they weren’t truly listening. We heard the “clomping” of our friends rain boots, the “steady waters” from the creek, and even a “bouncing ball” being dribbled on the playground a little ways away. This week, we decided to expand our Listening Walk and see what other sounds our neighborhood produces, so we took another walk! We found ourselves in our backyard (Hamilton Road/Orchard Road) and we couldn’t believe all the new sounds we heard.
“The loud wind in the grass” – Savannah
“Crickets” – Caston
“Nails getting hammered into a roof” – Griffin
“A big, yellow dog!” – Dylan
“I see my mom!!!” – Ellie
“A scooter” – Nora
These were just a few of the many sounds we heard in just a short period of time. It is so rewarding to see the students acknowledge the importance of not just hearing what’s happening in the world around them, but taking the time to genuinely listen and appreciate what they’ve heard. It’s a valuable lesson to us adults, as well. There’s a lot said and heard in a day, but we can learn a lot when we truly listen to one another!
In phonics the students are continuing to add letters and sounds to their toolkits. Some of us are becoming more confident and acquainted with blending our sounds to make words such as “rat”, “map”, “hut”, and “cup” as well as using those sounds to tap out and spell words, too! While others are beginning to work on writing sentences, using hershey kisses for proper spacing! In all of our literacy/phonics groups we are seeing so much growth already and it’s only week 8! We could not be more proud of these kiddos and cannot wait to see their growth continue in the weeks to come. In math patterns are a hot topic! After reading “Pattern” by Henry Pluckrose, we learned that patterns can be all around us. From rugs, to flannel shirts, and even the bottoms of our shoes. We’ve also become acquainted with different pattern sets such as AB, AAB, AABB, and many more! It’s been so much fun watching them create and repeat patterns with colors, shapes, and different sized counting bears. Ask your kiddos to create a pattern for you and then you guess what kind they’ve made OR vice versa. Their patterns can get pretty tricky, so don’t let them trick ya!
We finished up the week by visiting our classroom library. We returned our picture book of choice, checked out new ones, and even got to stamp our library cards so we know it’s official! The students were thrilled to get new books in their book boxes, share what they chose with one another, and of course stamping their cards!! We also painted the beautiful leaves that we created with our special visitors last week. Air dry clay can be tricky and some of the leaves didn’t make it in one piece… BUT just as real leaves can crumble/crack and still be beautiful, we realized that can be the case with ours, too! We can’t wait to hang them from our classroom branches for all to see.
We hope you have a great weekend!
See ya Monday,
Miss Tylar & Miss Gina
