Important Dates:
Tuesday, October 22nd – Students are encouraged to wear pink to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness! Donations will be collected and sent to local breast care centers.
Wednesday, October 23rd – 2nd grade is learning from our WVNCC campus!
Right at 8:45 we will be heading to the library. After the library we are walking to WTOV 7 to talk with their meteorologist! Then it should be close to lunchtime. After lunch we are going to take a trip to some Grow OV locations and see if there are any veggies growing that we can use in an upcoming kids in the kitchen recipe.
Northern Branch Campus is located in the former Student Union building of WV Northern Community College. Below is a description of our drop-off and pick-up recommendations. The address of the building is 8 16th Street. When dropping your child off, you have a few options. There is a parking lot attached to the building (off Market Street), but spaces are limited so we ask that you do not park there for long. Parking along the main streets (Market or 16th) and using the paid meters is also an option if you’d prefer to park and walk your child to the front doors. When arriving at the door, you will be greeted by a WCDS administrator (usually Mr. McDonald or Mrs. Skadra), and our classroom is located upstairs and through two sets of locking doors (exterior and interior). Look for the WCDS logo sign hanging in the front door window if you want to confirm you are in the right spot. When picking up, please just arrive back at the same spot and allow the WCDS administrator outside to know you are there and they will text the teachers upstairs. Beforecare will be available from 7:45-8:15. Regular Drop-off will take place from 8:15-8:45. Pickup will take place directly from the Northern Campus between 2:45-3:15. There is no aftercare at Northern. Students will need a packed lunch, a water bottle, and two snacks. Please wear Country Day attire and comfortable walking shoes. We look forward to a fun day!
October 31st – 9:15 Whole School Halloween Parade. Students should come to school dressed in costume and bring a change of casual clothes to change into afterward.
Fall is in full swing around here! This week in second grade we continued with our spooky writings. Within our writing, we have been working on problems and solutions and how to effectively explain how we reached the solution! The kiddos have also been working hard on their first book report! We saw a couple of great presentations this week!
In math, we have moved on to two-digit addition. All that fact practice we did at the beginning of the year is paying off now! We even challenged the kiddos to collaborate and solve a couple of word problems! Next week, we will move on to two-digit subtraction.
We carved pumpkins this week and talked about how they are a member of the squash family. We picked out the seeds and talked about how they are packed with nutrients! We gave half the seeds a savory flavor and the other half a sweet flavor!
In deep dive, we studied tornadoes and earthquakes. There was lots of talk about tectonic plates, the Richter scale, and seismographs! The kiddos had to build their own build to see if it would withstand an earthquake (a tray full of marbles!) We are so excited to talk to a real meteorologist next week!
Have a fantastic weekend!
