Hello there 3rd Grade Families!
The “EY” pattern in phonics represents a specific vowel sound. This pattern often produces the long “a” or “ee” sound, depending on the word. We focused on the “ee” sound of EY this week with words like HOCKEY, PARSLEY, AND CHIMNEY. The key takeaway in math this week was subtracting across zeros. This can be a bit tricky, but it’s an important skill in math! The kiddos merged into subtracting money amounts, like $20.00 – 13.97 = ? After solving to find the difference, students then had to figure out what combination of bills and coins would make the change they would receive. Cha-ching! We wrapped up our Mythical Creature writing this week and were even able to share some of our tales out loud. What a magical experience!
Now, on to deep dives… Social Studies continued down the “country roads” of WV as we used our geography knowledge to identify where WCDS is located on a WV map. Students also learned some new facts about WV rankings, including size and population. Students learned about another group of vertebrates called FISH! The kiddos dove into this aquatic realm to discuss what makes a fish….a fish! We have a blue Betta fish as a class pet, which the students are really enjoying. Some additional exciting news is that we got to meet our “adopted” 1-month-old calf named Peony (named after the flower). We are coordinating with Farmer Mackenzie of Four Pines Farm near Sugarcreek, OH. The students are SO excited to learn about Peony and have even gotten a chance to see pictures of her. Adorable doesn’t even begin to describe our little bovine beauty!!
Our week concluded with a trip to West Liberty University as we visited students and professors of the Zoo Science program. We were able to learn more about animals with hands-on experiences. The kiddos also got to visit the “maker’s space” where they created animal enrichments which served as provocations for real live animals! What a neat experience!!
