Happy Halloween JK Families!

Welcome to the new JK crew: Taylor Swift, a Skunk, a Hello Kitty Skeleton, a Cowgirl Rockstar, an Angler Fish, a Ghostbuster, 2 Leonardos from the Ninja Turtles, a Big Bad Wolf and her 3 pigs, a Tree Frog, a Construction Worker, Cat Boy, Chase from Paw Patrol, a Mummy, a Green Ninja, Freddy Kruger, a Vampire, Minnie Mouse, Elsa, Anna, A Graceful Acrobat, Princess Aurora, and J. Voorhees took over JK this Thursday as we celebrated Halloween together. The kiddos were full of anticipation for the special day and could not wait to share in all of the Halloween fun together. We joined the other classes in a parade around the loop and then had a mini dance party in the gym. After boogying down, we loaded up as a class on Miss Britney’s trailer for a tractor-pulled hayride. We thank her for giving us such a special thing to do together. It was definitely a fan-favorite of the day! While darned in our unique duds, we took to some spooky provocations in our classroom. Our light table was filled with haunting jars and containers of eyeballs, spiders, snakes, bats, and even a skeleton hand. A sensory bin with colored rice and black beans brought squeals of delight as little buckets were filled and dumped over and over again. Haunted mansions were made out of orange and black cups, while a giant sticky spider web was covered with lots of cotton “spiders”. Finally, we had some crazy mummy action happening as some of the students (and Miss Liz and Miss Claire) were wrapped in toilet paper. We thank all of those who volunteered to provide items for our celebration. Everything was so yummy and it made for a great day!

In preparation for the holiday, we continued to explore all things Fall. Using our stamped paintings from last week, the students were invited to collage on their papers. With beautiful pressed leaves and dyed pumpkin seeds, the images came to life with lots of colorful textures. Our pour-painted pumpkins gained a pop of life as the students carefully added rounded pushpins in intricate designs. They lined the steps outside of our classroom as a festive greeting for all of the visitors and we couldn’t get enough. Four larger pumpkins were covered in strips of patterned fabrics and of course, lots of glitter! They made for the perfect centerpieces for our Halloween party.

In Math this week we introduced the students to the wonderful world of shapes, having noticed their attraction to them during our Daily Discovery provocations and Morning Gatherings. With spiders on the brain, we read Walter’s Wonderful Web by Tim Hopgood. Throughout the story, Walter tries making his webs using basic shapes such as circles, triangles, and squares, but they all end up blowing away in the wind. It isn’t until he combines all of them to create the most magical and sturdy web of all. As the children ooed and aahed at his final web, we knew we had to give them the chance to create their own. Using black glue, intricate lines, squiggles, swirls, and other shapes came together to form webs. The students then sprinkled and shook salt onto the black glue, giving the shapes a sparkly texture. Once it dries, we will add color using our watercolor paint palettes. To further explore shapes, the students were invited to fill in taped out shapes on our tables and little mirrors with loose parts. They also tried their hand at building the shapes using popsicle sticks.

This week we also explored the letter Pp and the number 4. Our word web was massive as words starting with the /p/ sound came effortlessly out of the children’s mouths. Popsicle, peanuts, puppy, pow, pig, pepperoni, powerful, pizza, purple, parking, and pow were just a selection of the words that we came up with. The students worked hard to remember the proper direction of the letter P and number 4 while writing them our whiteboards and in our handwriting books. We are so proud of all of the learning that they have been doing and just love seeing them succeed in their efforts!

We hope you had a fun holiday and a great weekend! See you on Monday!
