Dear JK Families,
Will you join us on an interactive journey? One that is full of dots, twists, turns, loop-de-loops, and zigzags? All you need to do is let your imagination run wild and you will get to experience firsthand what the students have been exploring this week. As the kiddos continued to inspire us to find new ways to make things move, we went right along with our mini-author study all about Herve Tullet. This week we read Dot! Scribble! Go! in which our single finger turned into a magical tool that could turn lines, squiggles and dots into anything. We then read Tap! Tap! Tap!, dancing our hands through each page and letting out out some energy. Four provocations were set up to mimic the flow of the stories and other movement we have been seeing from the children. Indoor snowballs were carefully aimed as the students tried to make as many as possible in various-sized buckets. One group of kiddos even used the extra buckets as helmets as the snowballs were dumped on their heads. Bingo dobbers and pom-pom “paint brushes” dabbed and glided across long sheets of paper, but don’t forget the interesting colors that were mixed simultaneously. A triangular pegboard was transformed into a unique “color race”. Covered in wax paper, the students squirted, squeezed, and dripped liquid watercolors down the slope, taking turns at reaching all the way to the top and watching as the beads of color traveled all the way down. The students also had a chance to design their own parachutes. They watercolored a large coffee filter and little “basket”, which were then connected to a few pieces of string. You cannot have a parachute without a flyer, so they students were invited to draw a mini-version of themselves to be placed in their basket. We will test out our parachutes next week, so stay tuned for the outcome.
“If I were a dot, I would…” was our journal prompt as we thought about all the fun ways that Herve Tullet’s dots were exercised in his books. Here are some things that the students came up with:
“Fly” -Izzak
“Be a rainbow dot and I would travel the city.”- Mylah
“Go on an adventure to the forest.” -Bria
“Go on a lot of colors like this, boom, boom, boom.” -Stylee
“I am the dot. These are the eyes in the tunnel.”- Leonardo
“Line them up to go to the gym. They would change colors.”- Bodhi
“Go on an adventure to the movies.” -Ollie
“Go to the store.” -Bradford
“Try and meet other dots. I made an orange dot by mixing them.” -Dax
“I would find a track and ride the whole track.” -Wendell
“Go up and down in circles.” -Lucas
“Go on the road.” -Scarlett
“Turn into a dinosaur.” -Lola
“Go over bumps and squiggles.” -Rory
“Go all over the road.”- Hunter
“Play”- Henry
“Be a king.” -Forrest
“Turn into a whale.” -Hailey
“Go on a road.” -Noah
After we finished our writing, we had a mini-dance session as we did the classic Hokey Pokey and some freeze dances. We have some excellent dancers on our hands!
When we weren’t moving and grooving, JK had the absolute pleasure of dining out this week at the hottest new restaurant in town. SK Safe Garden is the quaintest of places to eat, offering a wide variety of foods and drinks. JK was invited to visit at the Grand Opening, and boy, were we impressed. The SK kiddos did an amazing job showing us to our seats, taking our orders, and then bussing the tables. We congratulate them on their success and thank them for sharing their experience!
The students were introduced to the letter Uu this week and the number 6. We created word webs that included words such as umpire, up, umbrella, and unicorn, and some students even mentioned words that had the short /u/ sound in them. We practiced writing and counting to 6, even noticing how 6 is made up of 3 and 3.
We want to acknowledge all of the support you gave during 29 Hours. The school reached 100% family participation, which is absolutely amazing! Every little bit helps us to support our students in their learning and to offer them new experiences. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Have the best weekend!
