Hello Third Grade Families!!
We are halfway through November and already have so much to be thankful for. We appreciate your participation in our 29 Hours of Giving fundraiser event! Donations will go toward so many different opportunities and experiences for our students, making so many more things possible HERE!
We have amped up math this week with multiplication! The kiddos were so excited to learn about all the new math lingo; Our vocabulary now includes words like factors, products, and equal groups. We’ve been thinking of multiplication as addition’s more efficient cousin, in that it has the ability to produce the same answer with less effort. Instead of 2+2+2+2+2+2+2 = 14, we can now say 7×2=14. Students also used manipulatives in order to create actual equal groups and then transform that real-life scenario into a multiplication problem.
ELA branches out into phonics, reading, grammar, and writing. In phonics this week, we learned about schwa A, which sounds like “uh” or the “lazy A” sound. During reading time, we practiced fluency by reading an article about Veterans Day. Focusing on only one passage, students listened to a read-aloud, read with partners, and then read silently to themselves. Reading practice is like exercise for the brain, so please keep up the reading practice at home to support your kiddo’s fluency. Grammar was very descriptive as we continued our study of adjectives. We reviewed how to use our senses to identify adjectives, like RED, SOFT, and CRUNCHY, that describe what kind. Students also learned adjectives for how many, like SEVERAL, A LOT, and A HANDFUL. In the world of writing, we wrapped up our first memoir this week and displayed them, equipped with cover sheets, on our wall. So many memories were shared!
Deep dives shifted course to STEAM Lab and Goods & Services. This week we learned about different types of clouds, went outside and sketched clouds, and finally made models of clouds. We were up to our elbows in cotton by the time our cloud models were created! Hopefully their clouds all floated home for you to enjoy! Goods & Services will be focusing on many things, including product development, marketing, and economics. The entrepreneurial spark is already ignited in third grade!
