This week, the students took their second Knowledge Check, planned a Thanksgiving meal, learned about the thirteen original colonies, studied the parts of an egg, wrote about gratitude, celebrated a birthday (Happy Birthday, Ella), dressed in cozy pajamas, celebrated the first snow, enjoyed a pepperoni roll lunch, and ended the week by dancing their hearts out at the all-school dance party. Whew! And that’s not all…please read on to see what else we did this week.

Have a great weekend,

Grace and Stella

In ELA:

  • Students worked hard to complete their second Knowledge Checks and did very well! We are very proud of their hard work to retain their skills and show what they know!
  • Students are practicing the drop the “e” rule. They also learned how sometimes spellings can be “outdated” of changed over time through research.
  •  Memoirs are almost completed! Students will have a chance to share these as well as having them displayed in our classroom. Through this writing process, students have also been working on their typing skills. We encourage them to practice logging into their Google Classroom at home to make this a more seamless process.

In Math:

  • The students took Knowledge Check #2, which included a menu math page. Review and corrections are being made.
  • Thanksgiving dinners were planned by seven different groups. Each group “shopped” for a Thanksgiving dinner from three different types of grocery stores. They also learned how to use coupons. Maybe your child can help with the planning and shopping for your Thanksgiving meal!
  • We are moving towards multi-digit multiplication (2-digit by 2-digit). Multiplication fact drills were sent home as homework this week. This is a great way for your child to practice facts for at least 10 minutes per day. Knowing these facts fluently will help your child as we move into a more involved multiplication process.

In U.S. History:

  • Students are continuing to learn about the original 13 colonies.
  • They were divided into three groups to research the southern, middle, and new england colonies.
  • Next week they will present their findings to the class and teach each other about their respective colonies.

In Embryology:

  • Students worked in “flocks” of 3-4 classmates on a Solo Cup Challenge, with the first round with little directions resulting in negative communication like “You’re doing it wrong.” Next, a silent round encouraged non-verbal teamwork, emphasizing the importance of constructive interaction.
  • Through reflection and practice, students adopted positive phrases such as “Let’s try again” and “That didn’t work, but let’s try this,” resulting in more successful and collaborative group efforts in the final round.
  • We started by observing the outside of an egg, beginning with hypotheses. Students then used tools like a spring scale, graduated cylinder, and tape measure to collect accurate data and test their predictions.

Important Reminders

  • Please have your child show you how they access their email and Google Classroom. We are moving towards independence with this skill. Also, part of their responsibility is arriving each morning with a charged computer. Thank you for your help with this.
