Winter Mayhem

The final (full) week of December is always a chaotic one. The students and teachers are stuck somewhere between burnout and joyful, holiday exuberance. There’s drums and otherwise miscellaneous instruments banging in the background- in preparation for the Holiday Show, and outside, the snow isn’t just falling, it seems to be a singular snowflake from being a falling carpet. One thing is for certain, this campus is truly picturesque when the snow falls. I don’t want to teach anywhere else! Make sure to check details for our show next week!

English w/ Mr. Rouse –

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes – None
  • As always, we covered various topics in our weekly warm-up, but one consistent topic pertained to the different verb moods we can use in a sentence: indicative, imperative, conditional.
  • We finished Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and wrapped up with some theme exercises and videos to prepare the students for their final assignment on the book: a persuasive paragraph identifying one of the themes of the book and providing a text example to support their claim.
  • We will be showing the movie, so if you don’t want your child watching a PG-13 movie, please let me know.

Math w/ Mrs. Boldrick –

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes – Square Roots (radicals) Quiz, Tuesday, December 17
  • Students are working on simplifying square roots using the product and quotient properties of square roots.
  • They took a quick “quiz” on perfect squares and square roots on Thursday. It is important that they know perfect squares to 20 with fluency.
  • Next Tuesday, they will take a quiz which covers perfect squares and simplifying radicals. We will review on Monday.

Math w/ Mrs. Howells

  • No Upcoming Tests or Quizzes
  • This week we reviewed expressions and equations.
  • Students are to be commended for their hard work and perseverance through many practice tasks! They are showing greater and greater fluency with integer operations and solving equations.
  • On Friday, they completed the Chapter 2 test. Grades will be available on Google Classroom.
  • Next, we begin Chapter 3: Inequalities.

Science w/ Mrs. Farris –

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes –
  • Students conducted independent research on the respiratory system and created a short presentation.
  • Initially eager to jump straight into slide creation, many found that taking time to gather information first, as with our previous organ project, led to better results.
  • Separating research from the presentation process improved the quality and content of their work – way to go 8th grade!

Music w/ Mrs. Chelsey –

  • We are ready and excited to share our “Winter Concert” with you!!! I am so very proud of all of the work the students put into this. They have come together as a choir and ensemble in many different ways and it shows!! We hope you enjoy the show!
  • Our music journal prompt this week was: Please reflect upon the music you have made for our winter concert!

Elective

  • Adulting 101 w/ Mr. Jividen and Mrs. Ochap-
  • Design  w/ Mrs. Boldrick and Mr. Hill- Set and prop building continues as the deadline looms.  Projects are coming together nicely and we are impressed with how all the kids stepped up to this challenge.
