MLK Jr. Day of Service at Wheeling Country Day School embodies the spirit of community and action, inspiring students to make a difference in the lives of others. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'” This day reminds us that even the youngest among us can contribute meaningfully to building a better world.
This year, for MLK Day, the second grade will be going to the Brooke County Animal Hospital! We will be taking a bus and heading that way on Monday, January 27th. More information will be coming soon! In the meantime, we will be collecting blankets as well as cat and dog treats!
Dear Families,
We had a wonderfully snowy week in second grade! The snow-covered playground became a place for fun, teamwork, and creativity as students built snow forts, made snow angels, and practiced their sledding skills. It’s been a joy watching them enjoy winter while learning and growing together.
Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to in the classroom:
This week, we dove into common and proper nouns. Ask your child about the difference—common nouns like “snowman” and proper nouns like “Frosty”! We also learned about the soft c and how it sounds like /s/ when it’s followed by an e, i, or y. Cindy’s favorite team is the Center City Cyclones.
We began our exciting journey into writing memoirs. Students are learning to write about small, meaningful moments from their own lives. We brainstormed ideas together and started drafting. You might hear your child talking about memories of special holidays, family adventures, or even snowy recess fun!
In math, we explored coins and how to count them! The students practiced identifying pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters while learning to add their values. We will also continue keeping regrouping and three-digit numbers fresh in their minds.
Teamwork took center stage this week as we began a research project on the planets. Each group chose a planet to study and started gathering facts using books, articles, and videos. Students worked together to answer questions like:
– How far is the planet from the sun? – What is the weather like there? – Could humans ever live on this planet?
The excitement is building as they prepare to create presentations to share with their classmates in the coming weeks.
**Outdoor Gear**: With all this snow, please make sure your child comes to school with warm clothes—hats, gloves, boots, and snow pants.
We can’t wait to see what new adventures and learning next week will bring!
Stay warm,
Laura, Carly, and Bekah
