MLK Jr. Day of Service at Wheeling Country Day School embodies the spirit of community and action, inspiring students to make a difference in the lives of others. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'” This day reminds us that even the youngest among us can contribute meaningfully to building a better world.

This year for MLK Day second grade will be going to the Brooke County Animal Shelter! We will be taking a bus and heading that way on Monday, January 27th.  More information will be coming soon!  In the meantime, we will be collecting blankets as well as cat and dog treats!

Monday will be a casual/dress warm day for our MLK Jr. Day of Service. If they have warm WCDS apparel, please wear that on Monday for our service day projects. As the weather forecast is predicted into the single digits and negative numbers for the first part of next week, your children are permitted to wear casual warm clothing to school for the entire week.

What a fun and exciting week we’ve had in second grade!

In phonics, we learned about the soft g sound. The kids loved the mnemonic sentence, “Gentle Ginger went to the gym,” which helps us remember that g makes a soft sound when it’s followed by e, i, or y.

In writing, the children continued working on their memoirs. This week, we focused on how to hook the reader with a strong emotion or a thoughtful question right from the very first sentence!

We also completed our AIMSweb Winter Benchmark assessments in reading and math. In math, we kept working on counting mixed change and introduced quarters. We’ll continue practicing this skill next week.

For Kids in the Kitchen, we made homemade pizzas! This idea sparked from a game the kids play each morning from 8:20-8:45. They’ve been busy creating a pizza and taco truck out of cardboard boxes, “hiring” employees, debating prices, setting business hours, and even creating menus. We tapped into their creativity and enthusiasm by making our very own pizzas!

In deep dive, we wrapped up our planet study and completed our model of the solar system. It looks amazing! We’re excited to start a brand-new topic next week.

It’s been such a joy seeing the children’s curiosity, creativity, and hard work shine this week.
