In the midst of a winter wonderland, our learning continued. From creating bunnies and alligators in the snow to staying inside to read a good book with new friends, we have fully immersed ourselves in this weather. We appreciate your emails, calls, and messages to let us know if your student will be staying home due to the weather. While we’ll miss them, we want you to make the best and safest decision for your family. On Monday we will have our day of service in honor of MLK Jr. Please bring any of the following items to donate to pack for the freeze shelter: travel-sized shampoo/conditioner, lip balm, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, tissue packs, hand sanitizer, hand wipes, body wash. We could also use quart-sized baggies to make individual kits.
Have a safe and warm weekend,
Grace and Stella
In ELA:
- 4th and 5th-grade literature circles continued. As next week approaches, we will be using the 20th as a “catch-up” day. Please remind your student to check in with their literature circle teacher if he/she has any questions about the assignments or readings.
- Submissions for Ohio County’s Awesome Author’s contest have been dropped off! We will excitedly await the results.
- The Spelling Bee was a hit! We are so proud of all of our students who braved the challenge and tried something new. We had 100% participation in 4th grade.
In Math:
- We finished up with our unit on telling time and reading a calendar.
- We’ll review these skills before the students take a concept review.
- We’re reviewing multiplication using 2 and 3-digit numbers. Some of the students are rusty with their multiplication facts. A ten-minute daily review of these facts is imperative for multiplication fluency.
- We are also working on cardinal directions, mapping skills using grids, and following verbal multi-step directions.
In U.S. History:
- Students wrote about their dinner party experience and practiced using Google Forms to express what they learned. “ I learned that Nancy Hart was as spy,” “I learned that trying new foods can make you love them!” were just some of the pieces they retained.
- We will be moving into the French and Indian war and exploring the Ohio Valley’s vital role in it.
In Embryology:
- It’s an EGG-citing time in 4th grade! The eggs are safely in the incubator, where students monitor the temperature and humidity daily.
- Students got a firsthand look inside the eggs using the egg candlers we made last week. When some groups found their light wasn’t bright enough, they didn’t give up!
- They collaborated on possible solutions and modified their candlers to improve the results. By Day 5, we could see the blood vessels, the developing eye, and even some movement!
Important Reminders:
- All 4th-grade families received an email about our Foward to 5th event. This is a great opportunity to learn more about WCDS 5th grade, meet the teachers, and catch a glimpse of what your child will experience in 5th grade. Here is an excerpt from that email:
“We are excited to invite you to a special event designed to give you a glimpse into the fifth-grade experience at Wheeling Country Day School. As many of you have been asking about what we offer, we thought the best way to answer would be to show you!
Forward to Fifth Event for 4th Grade Parents –
Date: January 23, 2025
Time: 4:00 pm
Location: WCDS Main Campus – Community Room
We will offer free aftercare for your children on this day from 4:00-5:00 pm.”
- For our MLK Day of service, 4th grade will collect travel-sized toiletry items. We will then spend our day packing them and writing notes to go in them to drop off at the freeze shelter. Suggested items to send – travel-sized shampoo/conditioner, lip balm, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, tissue packs, hand sanitizer, hand wipes, and body wash. We could also use quart-sized baggies to make individual kits.
- The snow and cold weather are here for a while. Thank you for helping your child with our policies on going outside. Please remember to label all articles of clothing, hats, mittens, gloves, or scarves with your child’s name.

Snow Fun with Mr. K!
