With another week outside of our, “normal” schedule, the students made the best of it and still had a packed week. They learned about MLK Jr. and his contributions to society. They then followed his legacy of caring for those in need by putting together personal hygiene bags for the YSS Freeze Shelter. Then, they were fifth graders for the day! On Thursday, students spent the day with fifth-grade teachers Mrs. Wallace and Mrs. Kramer to learn about what next year at Wheeling Country Day School would look like. Some of their favorite moments were Lego Robotics, writing poetry, math stations, and, of course, just being the “big kids” on campus for the day.

We will begin our Winter Aimsweb testing on Tuesday, January 28th through Thursday, January 30th. These tests will take place in the morning, so we encourage students to be on time and ready to go promptly at 8:45. A good night’s rest, along with a healthy breakfast, will give them the confidence to do their best!

Thank you to everyone who came to our very first, “Forward to Fifth” night on Thursday. We appreciate your willingness to learn more about our fifth-grade program. As always we value and appreciate your partnership.

In ELA:

  • Students wrapped up literature circles with 5th grade. On Friday, each group presented their book and encrouaged their classmates to read it. We are very proud of them for stepping outside of their comfort zone and not only reading new books but with new students and teachers!
  • To strengthen their writing skills, students worked on punctuating diaglogue. This is an important skill as many of their stories have started to have diagloue as one of their main componenents.

In Math:

  • Students reviewed 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication. We’ll work on 3-digit by 2-digit multiplication next week.
  • The students are working on map skills, which involve a lot of math – positions, cardinal directions, and measurement. Their homework this week was mapping their bedroom. We’ll continue this skill next week by mapping their house.

In U.S. History:

  • Students became colonial soldiers and are going through a simulation where they must make choices that will affect the outcome of the French and Indian war.
  • Currently they are deciding how to leave Fort Leboeuf: Burn 200 native canoes, report directly back to camp, or try to convince the french commander to sreconsider.

In Embryology:

  • Students hypothesized how many spoonfuls of water a sponge could hold and found it averaged 25 spoonfuls to reach saturation, then calculated percent humidity.
  • Monitoring the incubators’ humidity has been challenging, but students quickly noticed significant condensation this week.
  • During day 12 candling, they observed 11 viable eggs, identified two unfertilized ones and 3 “quitters”. Due to the delayed shipping, damaged eggs on arrival, cold temps, and humidity trouble, we set a goal to achieve a 50% hatch rate.

Important Reminders:

  • The snow and cold weather are here for a while. Thank you for helping your child with our policies on going outside. Please remember to label all articles of clothing, and hats, mittens, gloves, or scarves with your child’s name.
  • Our music class will be starting an “Instrument Creation” project on Wednesday, Jan. 29th and will continue for a few weeks. They will need to bring some materials (craft supplies or recyclables) to their classroom. Thank you for helping them be inventive creators… and we’ll post some photos as they work!
