Hello Families,
The topic in Senior Kindergarten these days is all about magnets! This week, we continued our exploration of the many ways magnets can be used. We learned two new vocabulary words: attract and repel. The children were fascinated as we explored the concept of magnetic fields and the north and south poles of a magnet.
We also read the book Magnet Max by Monica Hughes, where Max discovers objects around his house that attract and repel each other. Inspired by the story, we conducted our own search around the classroom to see what magnets would attract! The kids were so engaged, and their observations sparked great conversations. Here are a few of their comments:
“The air conditioners attract!” – Ellie
“Yep, this is metal.” – Regina
“These buttons attracted.” – Makayla
“Oh, this is metal, I didn’t know.” – Mia
Our little scientists continue their investigations with magnets and metals while letting their imaginations soar! The children were invited to explore magnets and discover how they interact with different kinds of metals. Using metal cans, nuts and bolts, and colorful magnets, they created imaginative faces and robots! Their creativity and collaboration were inspiring. Here are just a few of their exciting comments during the activity:
“Ok, I got the legs.” – Leo
“There’s the hat.” – Jackson
“I used three of these to make this stick together.” – Edna
“I’m making it really funny.” – Nora
“I’m making an alien.” – Cora
“It’s a unicorn.” – Bradley
“Mine has hair.” – Jackson
“Baby box.” – Joanna
“The name of my robot is Biggie.” – Isaac
“It’s a robot.” – Ollie
“This paper clip sticks without a magnet.” – Griffin
“This is the flag on it. This is the hair.” – Mia
“Recycling bin!” – Winston
In math, we tied in the concept of symmetry after reading I See Symmetry by Loreen Leedy. The children explored how symmetry connects to everyday objects and familiar sights around them. They learned the difference between vertical and horizontal. With tape marking the middle of the table, they became architects, working together to design beautifully symmetrical creations.
In phonics, we introduced the “H Brothers” this week: ch, sh, th! The children were so excited to learn about these special letter combinations and how they work together to make unique sounds. They were amazed at how /th/ made two different sounds, and they loved sharing their “H Brothers” words, like a tooth and these. To make it even more fun, we held a friendly competition to see how many words we could come up with for each type of /th/ sound: voiced (like these) vs. unvoiced (like tooth).
During our closing circle today, we had an important conversation about kindness and the power of our words. To help the children visualize this, we used a piece of paper to demonstrate what happens when unkind words are spoken. Each time someone said something not-so-nice, we crumpled the paper. We explained how, even though we might not see someone’s heart crumble on the outside, this is what it can feel like on the inside.
Next, we talked about the impact of kind words. As we shared examples of kind things we could say, we opened the paper back up. The children noticed that, although we tried to smooth it out, the paper was never the same again. It was a great way to remind everyone that while we can say sorry and try to make things better, our words have power!
Have a great weekend!
