Hello SK Families,
It’s hard to believe February has already begun! This year, the grand opening of the Safe Garden was a success, and then our focus shifted gears to “science-like” projects, but now we are leaning towards our location in the world. While some of us live in Ohio, the majority live in West Virginia; the children love to hear about their state facts.
This week we explored different landmarks in Ohio and West Virginia! We learned about what landmarks are by looking through books and having thoughtful conversations. The children were delighted to hear that some of the landmarks are right here in Wheeling. They were eager to share their ideas and make connections about their hometowns.
A landmark is….
“A state that you remember.” – Regina
“A part of the globe that lights up, like the one at my house.” – Makayla
“Somewhere, where different places are.” – Pierce
We placed pictures and facts about famous landmarks in their home state around the classroom for the children to explore. They had the opportunity to choose a landmark that interested them and carefully draw the details of what they observed. As they worked, we were amazed by their attention to detail, but their words were even more incredible!
“This place is beautiful.” – Regina
“Tell your dad to take you there (The Greenbrier)!” – Miss Gina
“He might not think it’s real, but it’s real, alright!” – Regina
“I’m drawing the camera now. Another door!” -Dermot
“Well, I should probably make this sign.” -Nora
“Ok, this looks more like it!.” -Caston
“The trees and the lighthouse are here, but this is the better part where the light comes out.” -Isaac
“These windows, I’m gonna have to do a lot of them.” Joanna
“The rocks are done.” Cora
“Right here I have to make the steps.” -Roman
“I need to put the guy on the deck.” -Felix
“I’m good at the outline, this has 23 windows!” -Ellie
“If I put it on the light table I can see all the lines!” -Pierce
We plan to dive even deeper into this exploration next week and can’t wait to see where their curious minds take us. Their enthusiasm for learning always leads us on the most exciting journeys!
This week in phonics the children were given a handful of magnet letters and challenged to create words using the letters they gathered. We also explored letter combinations such as “ing,” “ang,” “ung”, and “ong.” Some of the words they came up with included “long” and “sang.”
The class was introduced to measurements in math. We read Weights and Measurements by Jerry Pallotta, which sparked great discussions about how we measure objects and distances. One of the most exciting discoveries was finding out that running or walking our very own loop on campus six times equals one mile! As teachers, we are always amazed by the children’s interests. We may think a project will go one way, but they always throw us for a FUN loop—and we wouldn’t have it any other way!
We enjoy every day with your little ones! Thanks for sharing. Have a great long weekend!
