6th Grade Happenings 4/25/25

6th

We love International Day! It was wonderful to head back to main campus and participate in learning about different cultures. The animators were fantastic, the food was delicious, and the henna tattoos were a fan favorite as always. A big thanks to Mrs. McAteer and all the volunteers who made it a special day for all.

English w/ Mrs. McFadden –

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes – none scheduled
  • This week we wrapped up our books in verse. There is an assignment on Google classroom that was due today, but a couple of students needed extensions because their books were a little longer. Those should be completed this weekend.
  • We analyzed “The Raven” this week, with a focus on mood and tone. While this is a challenging poem, the mood and tone are super easy to pick up on.
  • We practiced spotting figurative language, and students are working on simile poems. Part of our assignment for the books in verse was to take a verse from their books and rewrite it in prose. Then students worked on taking a paragraph about a favorite place, and paring it down to put it in verse. They were to see where to put the line breaks and how to trim down unnecessary words to create the most impact in their poems.

Math w/ Mrs. McFadden

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes- none scheduled
  • We finished Chapter 7 and will move on to multiplying and dividing fractions in chapter 8.
  • The kids enjoyed a “Scoot” activity today. Task cards were scattered and hidden throughout the rooms and on the porch. The 8th graders helped hide the cards, which made the whole thing more fun and engaging.

Science w/ Mrs. Farris –

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes – No test or quiz scheduled
  • During our one-hour “Science in the News” challenge, students were surprised by how much they accomplished—reading, researching, and presenting their findings.
  • The articles highlighted how climate change impacts ecosystems, leading us to investigate the rise in tick populations at a local park. Students learned about the three types of ticks in West Virginia, including the one that carries Lyme disease.
  • They split into two teams: the Surveillance Group conducted tick drags to collect and identify ticks, while the Community Outreach Group created educational posters to promote tick safety and awareness. In the freshly cut grass of the park, we collected three ticks!

Music w/Mrs. Chelsey –

  • This week students worked on finishing their radio drama scripts and began rehearsing! We will rehearse all next week and begin our presentations the following – I’m very excited to hear these!!!
  • We began our “Everybody Dance Now” field day drumming routine and it’s going to be a lot of fun (and loud haha)
  • Our music journal prompt this week was “Have you ever created your own music? If not, what would you create?”
