On Tuesday, the 4th grade class visited the Stifel Fine Arts Center for a special morning of learning about art (Cubism), color, lines, values, and a pottery demonstration. They also got a chance to learn the history of the Stifel family home, which was donated to Oglebay Institute by the Stifel family. The students used pastels to color in a crab shape. After cutting the shapes out, they rearranged the shapes in “cubism” fashion to make a new form. Next, they watched a demonstration on pottery and the pottery wheel, presented by Rick Morgan, director of the Stifel Fine Arts Center, and a pottery expert. The kids were excited to tie in their knowledge of pottery from their Celebrate project (and WCDS art classes). They ended with an art scavenger hunt, which gave them an opportunity to visit the Stifel’s current art exhibit. We are filled with gratitude for the opportunity to visit and experience the Stifel Fine Arts Center.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Stella and Grace

In ELA:

  • Students are nearing the end of their novel study of Holes. They are anticipating the end as the climax is building. Please remind those students who have seen and/or watched the movie beforehand to keep the ending a secret!
  • In writing, students are working on their Attack Theatre poems. We love hearing their perspectives on others’ adversities and using their creativity to turn them into poetry! We can’t wait to display them on May 15th at their final performance.

In Math:

  • The students explored angles on an “Angle Walk” throughout campus. They learned about right angles, obtuse and acute angles, and straight angles.
  • They will be introduced to using a protractor to measure angles.
  • We will also introduce concepts using fractions. They will gain an understanding of what a fraction represents and use addition and multiplication with fractions.

In Castle Rock by Charlie Zitzelsberger:

  • In Castle Rock, the stock market went up once again.
  • My country, North Makalcia, solved two crises.

In STEAM by Ella Burkey:

  • We talked about different kinds of energy (wind, water, electricity) our towns could use.
  • Then we answered questions about why we picked the type of energy we did to explain it to our classmates.

Reminders:

  • Creek Day – Wednesday, May 7 – If weather permits, the students will have a chance to spend some time exploring the creek. Please send in creek shoes, clothes that can get dirty/wet, and a beach towel. Creek shoes should be closed (Crocs ARE acceptable, old sneakers, water shoes); no flip flops.
  • If you get a chance, please visit the Wheeling Artisan Center Gallery for The Art of Possibility, WCDS Student Gallery, showcasing art from WCDS students. The artwork will be on display from May 2nd through June 2nd.
