Hello JK Families,
Joy was felt in big and small ways during our three short days together. We felt it in their smiles as they made floam pies, raced dragons through the sky, dug in the sandbox, ran to the playground, and delighted at the magic of flashlights on disco balls! On our very first day together, the children had a chance to meet each other, one by one, by sitting on the big couch next to Miss Gina, while their classmates gave them a round of applause! We can already tell this wonderful group of children will love and care for each other as a class family and we can’t wait to grow and learn together. We read the story First Day of School by Esther van den Berg and were delighted at how engaged the children were with the tale. The book’s beautiful illustrations had the class so mesmerized that when it was over, they cheered, and even stood up to clap! We can tell this class will be an enthusiastic bunch and we can’t wait to see where the year ahead will take us.
Play was at the heart of our time together. The class practiced center time routines, and got to play in our 10 magical centers. They were able to choose from: castle, trains, science, light table, blocks, library, art, sensory, letters and numbers, and house. Oh the possibilities! They also enjoyed communal snack and practiced how to get to the playground and gym safely. They had a chance to meet Mr. Alex, their gym and drama teacher and Miss Meredith, their Spanish teacher. Getting to know new faces and learning the rhythm of their new classroom was a major part of our time together. We played a simple game to learn some of the children’s favorite things. They rolled a big dice and answered their favorite color, food, holiday, character, restaurant, or thing to play. Here’s what they had to say:
“A restaurant where we get lemonade.”-Avery
“All the princesses.”-Clara
“Bluey.”-Archie
“Easter.” -Jack
“Halloween, because it has all the candy!”- Lincoln
“Batman, because he can fly.” – Levi
“Spidey.”- Lennon
“I got character, Batman.” – Leland
“I like spidey.”- Sebastian
“Me like spaghetti.”- Gemma
“My favorite color is rainbow. Golden would be most favorite.” – Nala
“Ummm bananas!” -Isla
“Halloween.” -Zuri
“My favorite holiday is Valentine’s Day”-Ben
“My favorite food is banana with chocolate chips, and buffets, and pizza and cinnamon pizzas at the buffet.” -Donato
“Christmas.” – Maverick
“My favorite restaurant is Mexican.” – Atticus
“Blue and pink.” -Audrey
“I like to play with Stitch. ” -Ripley
“Cheese pizza.” -Brody
We also took some time to practice Mindfulness by learning about the importance of a belly breath! While balancing a block on their bellies, they inhaled and exhaled and watched the block rise and fall. They then got a turn to expand a breathing ball just like their lungs expand to hold a breath. It was a hit! We will spend lots of time this year working on our social emotional skills as it is a major part of a young child’s growth a development. We hope to give them tools to manage big emotions so they can build interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.
As always, it is an honor to spend our days with your child. This week gave a small glimpse into the love and joy we will share in the year ahead. Don’t blink! It will go fast. Thank you for supporting us along the way.
Happy weekend,
Miss Liz and Miss Gina
