Hello SK families! Though it was a short week, it was a beautiful week of learning as we settled further into our routines and built community together.

Each day we are practicing our morning check-in routine—writing our names, answering a fun question, and setting the tone for our learning. It has been a joy watching the children take ownership of this special time.

📚 Provocations: Who Am I?

We began our very first provocations centered around self-identity. To start, we read What I Like About Me by Allia Zobel-Nolan, a playful and interactive book celebrating everything from curly hair to wiggly ears! After reading, we reflected on the things we like about ourselves. Here are some of their words:

Lola – “My curly hair”

Sophia- “My clothes, they make me feel good about myself”

Scarlett- “My brown hair”

Evelyn – “My red curly hair”

Wendell – “My hands, they do so much”

Hailey – “My  hair, I like it when it’s braided”

Moxley – “Probably my hair”

Noah – “My eyes”

Bria- “My hair”

Addison – “My hands and my eyeballs”

Kipton- “My legs”

Izaak – “My dark eyes”

Bodhi – “In the mirror what I like is when I see my face in other people”

Lucas- “My speedy feet”

Henry – “My T-shirt”

Bradford  – “My mouth”

Daxton – “My legs”

Alyx – “My shoes”

Emma – “My blue eyes”

Stylee – “My stockings I’m wearing today, my mom bought these for me”

Ollie- “My hands, they do art”

Leonardo – “My shoes, I like to run”

Rory- “I like my eyes because they can move” (Proceeds to show us)

Mylah – “My legs”

The children were then invited to create their one-of-a kind self- portrait. They inspected every inch of those beautiful faces in mirrors and giggled with one another as they drew their unique self!

Later, we read Brown: The Many Shades of Love. This powerful story helped us begin a conversation about skin. Each child painted a block to represent their unique skin tone and then drew themselves on these blocks. Together, we had a meaningful discussion, and here are a few of their thoughts:

“It’s ok to be different” – Hailey

“It’s ok to love who you are” – Sophia

“Everyone has different shades of skin and it’s beautiful” – Bodhi

“Always be nice ans kind even when people have different skin or look different” – Alyx

After the children examined their skin, they got to squeezing, mixing and overflowing their own paint cups filled with various shades of multi-cultural paints to curate the perfect skin tone of their very own, they then named their shade:

Kipton – “Vanilla

Bradford – “Orange crescent”

Mylah – “cotton candy”

Wendell – “Wood”

Sophia – “Cinnamon”

Rory – “Light Chocolate”

Hailey – Chocolate”

Evelyn – “Cinnamon”

Ollie – “ Peach”

Lola – “tannish”

Bria – “Honey”

Stylee – “Light chocolate chip”

Scarlett – “Honeycomb”

Henry -” Light dark”

Emma – “Hot chocolate”

Bodhi – “Definitely light peach”

Lucas – “It would be light sand”

Addison -”chocolate with white”

Daxton- “Brown tan”

Alyx -”Blonde”

Izaak – “Chocolate”

Leonardo – “Sunlight”

Moxley -”Chocolate Brownie”

🔡 Phonics Adventures

In phonics, we didn’t just learn one letter—we learned TWO this week!

  • t says /t/ as in top
  • b says /b/ as in ball

Through songs, games, and hands-on stations, we explored these sounds in fun and memorable ways. We also had several visits from Handwriting Harry, who is helping us practice holding our pencils and writing letters with care.

🔢 Math Explorations

In math, we focused on number recognition with lots of interactive activities:

  • Making friendship bracelets with a set number of beads
  • Building, drawing, and writing to the number 3
  • Exploring math through hands-on stations and play

The children loved finding so many ways to represent numbers through art, building, and movement.

Big things are happening in SK, and we are so excited for all the learning and growth to come. We can’t wait to see everyone back on Monday, ready for another fun-filled week!

With joy,
Miss Hanna & Miss Arden
