ELA:

  • ELA Notebooks are off and running! We have reviewed common and proper nouns (they did fabulous) and introduced abstract and concrete nouns. Ask your students which one can be observed through the 5 senses!
  • 4th Grade Rats is always a wonderful novel to start. They crafted a paragraph about Suds or Joey and described them through their character traits. Going even further, they provided text evidence to support their chosen traits. These will be on display in the classroom!
  • We are gearing up to start spelling. In 4th Grade, we focus on rules instead of memorization. If you’ve been with us at WCDS for a year or two, this shouldn’t be a shock. They will be given a rule to learn and then tested on how they know the rule. The first test will take place on the 11th and will only be a practice test. We want them to get their feet wet and learn the process of test taking, and introduce anything that may be newer. They will receive a copy of the rules and common words that may show up on those tests.

Math:

  • Students continued to work with base ten blocks to understand the pattern in numbers (ones, tens, thousands).
  • We worked with the blocks to understand regrouping (11 ones equals 1 ten and 1 one)
  • A chart showing the number periods (ones, hundreds, thousands, millions) was introduced and will be kept in yellow folders as a math tool. This will help them read and write large numbers.
  • We built a “flat of 100 thousand” using boxes. The students were amazed at how big it was.

Early American History:

  • Students began to learn more about the similarities and differences between each region of the colonies. They have been surprised to learn about the different economies and even that they used different currencies!
  • We are leading into the conflict between the Colonies and England. Students will take on the role of a colonist to try and survive life in the colonies at this time.

Computer Science:

  • Students are beginning to explore educational websites such as Cool Math Games and Typing Bird. If they have tech time at home, we highly recommend these sites and will provide more as they learn about them!
  • If you received an email asking to help us bypass the parent code to add Gmail, please refer to the steps in the email to do so. If you are still having issues, please reach out.

Reminders:

  • Students will be taking the Aimsweb test on Tuesday and Wednesday (9th and 10th). If they are absent for either day, we will contact you with a makeup day. This is only a snapshot of what your student knows and is capable of. It gives us as teachers a baseline of where they are starting the year. Please help ensure they are getting a good night’s rest and breakfast before taking these tests. We want them at their best!
