Preschool Pinky Promises

Dear Preschool Families,

“I promise to run full court and show up each time, to get back up and let my magic shine.” These words from the book I Promise by Lebron James could not be more true for this special group of preschoolers. They continue to enter each day with a willingness and readiness to explore new materials and ideas. With every class at WCDS giving special attention to social-emotional learning this year, our students approached the idea of PS classroom expectations by tackling how we can be respectful and kind. What does it mean to be respectful and kind to a preschooler? We came up with 3 major ways that we could do that together, repeating these words in unison: I am kind, I am gentle, and I am a listener. After creating marks and images on 4×4 squares of paper using a mix of paint sticks, oil pastels, Sharpies, and crayons (all in hues of blue and white), the students graciously shared their ideas. Here is what they had to say:

Jazzy “ I am being gentle” (very gently using her paintstick)

Romeo “I’m being kinder with being a nice boy with my black power wheel and driving it super fast in my yard and sharing it”

Khy “Kind…not hitting.”

Odessa “I’m being kind from hugging.”

Stone  “I’m being kind to my brother.”

Addie “Kind”

Theo- “I colored this all blue”

Jazzy “A heart.”

Emma “To be kind is not to push someone on the slide.”

Robert “I drew a penguin and a hippo and an elephant. They are being kind to each other.”

Preston “I’m a listener. I listen to you.”

Cam “It’s an excavator. I’m playing with a friend that was at Uncle Brian’s.”

Alex “It’s a person. It’s daddy. He is working.”

Luella “It’s a bumblebee. He is giving someone a hug.”

Adler “I made a painting for mommy and daddy.”

Sloane “I am kind and thoughtful.”

Sasha- “Gentle”(jumping with very gentle feet)

Tory “Gentle” (showing us her gentle hands)

We then revisited the same book and shared with each other what caring mean and looks like. The students shared how they care for pets, their bodies, their toys, and our classroom. “Sharing is caring!” Adler exclaimed as another set of beautiful images were created to add to our classroom “quilt”.

Our self-identity adventures continued this week as we put our noses to the test. The students practiced mindfulness by closing their eyes and imaging their favorite food. We encouraged them to think about the food smells and how that smell makes them feel. Apples and jelly that take you outside , mac and cheese made by grown-ups, gummy sharks that bring joy, yummy chips, spaghetti shared with a teacher, and strawberries from a special restaurant were just a few of the visualizations that the children had and boy did it make us hungry! We then invited the students to guess the smell of the spices were used to make spice paint. The cinnamon brought up a favorite playdough, the ginger scrunched some noses, and the tea reminded a few of a candle from home. The homemade spice paint was then used to cover our nose pictures and obviously make the room smell oh so good!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend! See you soon!

Sincerely,

Miss Claire, Miss Airry, and Miss Meredith
