6th Grade Happenings 9/12/25

  • Student Volunteer Opportunity: Foxfire Film Festival
The inaugural Foxfire Film Festival will take place in Wheeling from September 11–14, 2025, and organizers are inviting high school students to sign up as volunteers. This is a unique chance for students to gain hands-on experience at a major cultural event, connect with filmmakers and industry professionals, and contribute to the community.
  • Volunteer roles may include guest check-in, ushering, assisting with panels and workshops, and general event support. All volunteers will be given Foxfire Volunteer t-shirts to wear during their shifts. Students can sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C054BA9AC2DA3F5CF8-58200003-foxfire

It was great to see so many of you at parent night! If you were unable to attend, please feel free to reach out with any questions. Also, you can check your child’s progress anytime through their Google Classrooms.

English w/ Mrs. McFadden –

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes- none scheduled
  • One Friday a month, the children’s librarian at the Ohio County Public Library will visit our class. It’s always entertaining to listen to Mr. B read a story, and this week he shared the classic, Ms. Nelson Is Missing. Several students were brave enough to reenact the story through reader’s theater. They were awesome!
  • We continued our study of text structures, adding the styles of compare and contrast, and description.
  • We completed our Aimsweb testing!

Math w/ Mrs. McFadden –

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes – Chapter 1 test Tuesday
  • I am including a Chapter 1 pretest along with the answers in Google Classroom if your child would like something to “study” for the test. This is completely optional!
  • Completed math section of Aimsweb.
  • Completed chapter one review. Students seem to have a solid understanding of estimating, adding and subtracting decimals, converting word phrases to expressions, and substituting “givens” into expressions.

Deep Dive w/ Mr. K –

  • Our 6th graders had a thoughtful and progressive discussion about the pros and cons of social media and the question of identity—who we are online versus who we are in the real world. Next, we’ll be starting the documentary The Social Dilemma to spark even deeper conversations about social media presence and its impact.

Science w/ Mrs. McKay –

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes – news quiz with Science World magazine
  • This week, students completed a simulation to gain an understanding of watersheds.
  • Students read and discussed current news articles in the world of science.

Music w/Mrs. Chelsey –

  • Upcoming Tests/Quizzes – Next Friday, we will have a quiz on notation. We will review on Wednesday, but students already have their “eggs and ham” study sheet if they’d like to begin preparing.
  • This week, students shared their holiday raps that they wrote last week. There were some really great rhythms, rhymes and melodies!! We did a first listen to one of our holiday show songs that we will begin learning next week. We also went outside to complete our journal entry of “How does the world and sounds around us create their own music”.

Social Studies w/Mr. Jividen –

  • 6th Grade Students completed a civics simulation
  • They were tasked with trying to change school rules
  • 13 bills were introduced, and 4 were successful

Art w/ Mr. K –

Our 7th and 8th graders are getting creative in art class with 3D cardboard sculptures! Each student chose their own subject, and they’re learning to think in layers and multiple dimensions as they build. The projects are looking awesome so far!

SEL w/ Mrs. Ochap –

  • This week, students are learning about building relationships and working together as a team. Through interactive and engaging group activities, students will have the opportunity to get to know new peers in their class and work on relationship-building skills. Ask your student who they’ve met recently.

Elective –

  • Creation Lab w/ Mrs. Boldrick & Mrs. Ochap – Students are measuring and cutting for their projects. Some took on the 2×4 Challenge, and some are making a miniature classroom out of various recycled materials.
  • Cooking w/ Mrs. McFadden – This week we continued to explore recipes of Central America. We tried canoas (plantains fried and stuffed to look like canoes) and plantain empanadas. Plantain week was met with mediocre reviews.
  • Broadcasting w/ Mr. Alex –
