Dear Families,
We had such a full and exciting week in 2nd grade! There was never a dull moment and each day brought us something new to learn! Here are some highlights:
📚 Phonics: We learned the oi sound in words like coin and boil. The students have been practicing reading and spelling with this new sound.
➖ Math: We began exploring subtraction strategies and building a strong foundation for problem-solving. Although a few friends were initially stumped, they quickly caught on to a method that works best for them and they took off!
✏️ Writing: Students wrapped up their summer writing pieces (that are hanging so beautifully on our writing wall) and proudly moved into our fall topics. These nonfiction and fiction pieces are already starting to come together and we cannot wait to share them with you all!
📝 Grammar: Now that we’ve got nouns down to a science, we’ve added verbs to our vocabulary! The students had a blast playing “Lights, Camera, ACTION”, acting out various verbs and guessing what the verb was. They’ve been adding these verbs to their writings, making them more complete and lively. We are so proud of them
🪶 Deep Dive: Our animal studies continued as we explored amphibians, reptiles, and birds in greater detail. Our “Battle of the Beaks” game was a class hit! The students loved using various clamping materials to attempt to pick up items like birds do with their beaks!
🎭 Drama: The students participated in a Silly Wall contest and an improv game called “slideshow” where one student tells a story and the others are the picture!
🫘 Kids in the Kitchen: Making hummus was such a hit! The students loved learning how simple ingredients can make a tasty snack. Each Kids in the Kitchen segment is allowing the students (and miss Tylar) the opportunity to try something new. They are all learning that they like more than they may think and that we should never yuck someone’s yum! Plus, Braden said “If I were dead, this hummus would bring me back to life!”. It doesn’t get much tastier than that!
Finally, a BIG thank you to all the parents who visited on Thursday night. Seeing your child beam with pride from the letters you left and the bookmarks you so beautifully decorated, just filled our hearts with joy. It was wonderful and a perfect experience to put faces to names and make connections with the families behind our amazing students!
We’re excited for another great week ahead!💙💛
