Fall mornings and summer afternoons are what we are experiencing right now. We’re taking advantage of these beautiful days to bring learning to our outside spaces. The kids are loving it.

Thank you to Myer’s dad, Mr. Katz, for spending time with the class on Friday morning. He helped the students learn about soap and candle making, which aligns with our early American history deep dive.

Please access our Parent-Teacher Conferences schedule to sign up for a time for us to come together to talk about your child’s learning. We look forward to meeting with you! The day before your time slot, we are sending out reminder emails.

ELA:

  • We are introducing elements of figurative language to help the students write more interesting and engaging stories. Ask your child about onomatopoeia and similes.
  • Students worked on plural nouns and the different spellings that depend on the ending of the word. This will be helpful to them as they continue to work on their writing craft.
  • Genres are in full swing as we talked about the subgenres of fiction, along with autobiographies and biographies.

Math:

  • The students continue to work with place-value in the millions.
  • They are writing large numbers in expanded form.
  • We encourage them to use their place-value chart as a math tool to write these large numbers in standard and expanded form.
  • Next week, we’ll review the addition process with regrouping and move into addition with large numbers.

Early American History:

  • Students capped off their colonial history by making candles and soap.
  • They have now moved into the start of the American Revolution. Currently, the colonies are dissatisfied with England, and the students are exploring the reasons why.
  • Students are also exploring choices as a colonial soldier. Will the travel through the Appalachian Mountains or by river to try and secure the Ohio River Valley?

Computer Science:

  • We started keyboarding (typing) lessons this week. The students are amazed that they can type using the fingers fixed on the home keys  – F and J.
  • We are excited for them to learn some typing skills. They are currently using a free website called typingbird.com

Reminders:

  • Please check your child’s yellow folder daily. If there are any papers in the “Stay at home side”, please empty that pocket.
  • Also, please do a daily check of your child’s agenda page. This gives a heads up on any assignments that are due, or any important dates that need to be noted.
