In the number 32, what number is in the ones place and what number in the tens?
What’s a fiction story?
In the sentence “My brown dog ran away.”, what is the verb? Noun(s)?? Adjectives???
What’s an animal that uses camouflage? Why??
What is one of the food groups on the food pyramid? What’s a food from it??
This week brought lots of rain, which kept us indoors for much of the time, but we were so excited to finally get outside on Friday! Even though picture day was delayed due to the weather, it turned out to be an even more beautiful day, and the students looked absolutely stunning even the second time around. If you were missing, don’t worry, retakes will be coming soon!
Here are some of the highlights from our learning this week:
📚 Phonics: We introduced the /ee/ sound in words like tree and cheek. The students practiced reading and spelling, and they’re starting to spot this pattern quickly in their writings and reading!
➖ Math: We solved for unknown numbers in subtraction problems, practiced checking subtraction with addition, introduced place value, AND learned how to write numbers in expanded form. These math wizards are taking on each new concept with boldness and an ambitious attitude. We love to see it!
✏️ Writing: We wrapped up our fall writing pieces and have begun brainstorming and discussing fictional stories. The students are so excited to create imaginative pieces of their own and we can’t wait to see what they come up with!
📝 Grammar: We continued to dig deep into parts of speech this week—adjectives, nouns, and verbs. The students practiced identifying them in sentences and using them in their own writing. Their sentences are becoming more descriptive and lively each day!
🦎 Deep Dive: We learned all about camouflage and mimicry in the animal world. The highlight of this discovery was an activity where the students created their own animals, “hid” them in plain sight, and challenged their classmates to find them. It was both fun and eye-opening!
🥗 Kids in the Kitchen: We decided to take it back to the basics by learning about the food pyramid and how it helps us make healthy choices. The students loved learning and discussing all of the different food groups and the importance of making sure we eat a variety of foods.
We would be crazy not to inform you that we finished our first Humphrey book in the series and the students couldn’t have been more thrilled with the way it ended. The Humphrey series is always a class hit and never ceases to amaze the students or us! We can’t wait to dive into the next book next week. We also had the privilege of jazzing up our outdoor space thanks to the lovely pumpkin donation from our friend, Athena! The kiddos were ecstatic to get “crafty” and set the tone for Fall using their cute little pumpkins. We also wanted to take the time to say thank you to all the parents who have already made time to meet with us for parent partnership meetings. If you haven’t yet, it’s not too late! You can still sign up, and we’d love the opportunity to connect with you! Use this link (Parent Partnership Meetings) to see what days/times are available and best for you next week.
Have a great weekend,
Miss Tylar & Mrs. Demarest
