What a wonderful, short, but sweet week! We were over the moon Friday afternoon as we watched the kiddos be the best hosts and hostesses in town. They blew us away with their ability to share what they’re learning with their special people and guide them around our space. While we were busy prepping for Friday, the kiddos still made sure to make time for learning and fun! Here are the highlights:

📚 Phonics: This week we explored the /or/ sound as in corn, storm, and short. Students practiced reading, writing, and identifying words with this r-controlled vowel in games and small-group activities. We’re becoming experts at spotting these tricky sounds in our reading!

Math: We’ve moved on to adding two-digit numbers, with a strong focus on starting in the ones place. While this can be the trickiest part since our brains are used to reading left to right, the students are quickly picking up on this concept which will be extremely beneficial for when we begin regrouping! We also have been using logical reasoning to solve real-world word problems. These can also be tricky, but the students are taking the challenge head on and not backing down! It’s been wonderful watching their confidence grow as they explain their thinking and tackle new challenges.

✏️ Writing: Our fiction stories are coming to a close, and we couldn’t be prouder! The students were thrilled to see some of their pieces displayed for their special people to enjoy. Watching them beam with pride as they shared their stories was such a highlight of the week!

📝 Grammar: We’re continuing to strengthen our understanding of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Mad Libs made a special appearance again during Special Persons Day and what fun it was! Students loved helping their guests create and read their very own silly stories.

🦴 Deep Dive: Students chose an animal (solo or with a partner) to research, describe, and prepare to present to the class. We cannot wait to continue to build on our projects next week! We even had a few 5th graders visit to share what they’re learning about, macroinvertebrates. It was amazing to see the connections our students made between the two animal categories.

🍎 Kids in the Kitchen: This week’s treat was an apple butter dip, and it was a total hit! Many came back for seconds during Special Persons Day which was a key indicator that it was a fan favorite. The students were so proud to share something they made themselves with the people they love most.

Have a great weekend!
See ya Monday,
