💬 “What did you learn at school?” Conversation Starters:
Can you make a silly sentence using as many “ay” words as you can?
What helps you remember to carry the ten when you regroup?
What memory are you writing about in your memoir?
Do you know what continent we live on?
How did you season your seeds? Which flavor did you like best?
What a full and fun week we’ve had in second grade! Our classroom has been buzzing with learning and excitement. Here’s a peek at what we’ve been up to:
📚 Reading & Spelling:
This week, we focused on the “ay” vowel team—as in day, play, and stay. Students practiced reading and spelling these words in games, sentences, and short stories. Be sure to look for “ay” words as you read together at home!
➕ Math:
We worked hard on two-digit addition with regrouping, and even challenged ourselves by adding three and four addends! Students are getting comfortable showing their work, carrying over tens, and checking their answers. Keep practicing quick addition facts at home—it really helps build confidence!
✏️ Writing:
We began our memoir writing unit, where students are learning to write about important, memorable moments in their lives. We’ve talked about how to stretch a small moment by adding details, thoughts, and feelings. Ask your child what story they’ve chosen to write about—it’s a great conversation starter!
🌍 Social Studies – Geography:
Our new Geography Deep Dive has begun! We’ve been exploring the continents and oceans of our Earth and discussing what makes each one unique. Ask your child what an orange had to do with these lessons! Next week, we’ll start learning how to read and use maps—an adventure in itself!
🎃 Kids in the Kitchen:
Keeping with the season, we used more of the pumpkins we have here! Students worked together to cut open pumpkins, scoop out the seeds, and prepare them for baking. We seasoned them for a sweet and savory treat—a delicious end to a busy week of learning.
Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for all we do. Have a wonderful weekend!
Warmly,
Mrs. Demarest
