Good Morning, Families

Whoosh! Went the wind and it blew the web away…
This week in Junior Kindergarten, the children read Walter’s Wonderful Web by Tim Hopgood and were captivated by Walter the spider’s determination as he spun webs of all different shapes. Inspired by Walter’s creativity, our little “shape detectives” set off around the classroom hunting for circles, squares, triangles, and more. We discovered that shapes are hiding everywhere in the things we use every day! To keep the math fun going, we played an exciting round of Number Bingo, which quickly became a class favorite. The children did a fantastic job recognizing numbers 1–10 and cheering each other on by yelling, “Bingo” as a class!

In SEL (Social Emotional Learning), we continued practicing how to use “I statements” to express our feelings and needs in kind and respectful ways. The children also worked on recognizing emotions in others, helping them build stronger, more empathetic friendships. To support our calm and focus, we practiced mindful breathing while watching the gentle flicker of a (battery-operated!) candle.

As we counted down the days to our Halloween Festivities, excitement filled the classroom, and all things spooky came to life! The children got creative designing Halloween decorations for our photo backdrop by painting with witches’ brooms and spiders feet to make every stroke a little extra spooky. A favorite moment came from a bit of “witchy” pretend play:

“Come on, Avery, let’s make magic!” – Gemma
“Are these broomsticks? Do they fly? No, it’s painting potions!” – Avery

Meanwhile, at the sensory bins, simple black beans and rice transformed into bubbling cauldrons and imaginative Halloween feasts. The children stirred up all sorts of spooky creations:

“Eyeball drink!” – Levi
“Eyeball soup!” – Lincoln
“Eyeball candy!” – Lennon
“Halloween soup!” – Gemma
“Halloween mac and cheese!” – Archie
“Are witches real?” – Avery

To sprinkle in some phonics fun, we mixed up letters in a bubbly witch alphabet potion! Along with spooky and witches, we added some creepy objects to our castle, such as sticky spider webs, skeletons, and monster fingers.

We introduced our very first Reader’s Theater, bringing favorite Halloween stories to life with props from Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and There Was an Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams. The children eagerly joined in as each page turned, making the stories jump right off the page!

Last but certainly not least the main event… the Halloween Parade! The children proudly showed off their creative costumes to friends and families, their little legs working hard as they walked two full laps around the parade route before hopping on for a festive hayride. They waved, smiled, and soaked in every moment of Halloween fun!

Back in the classroom, the celebration continued with a mix of salty and sweet treats and plenty of spooky excitement. The children giggled their way through mummy wrapping with toilet paper, danced to favorite Halloween tunes, and explored spooky light projections around the room. It was the perfect end to a week filled with creativity, laughter, and a touch of Halloween magic!

Happy Halloween!
