Friday was filled with a lot of activity and spooky fun! The students enjoyed showing off their creative costumes to the rest of the school and the parents. They braved the haunted house presented by the 5th-grade class and enjoyed some fun classroom time with their peers. In the days preceding Halloween, the students wrote their own spooky stories, worked on a math witch project, and solved Halloween logic puzzles. It’s been a week full of fun!
ELA:
- Students completed their novel study of The Lemonade War! Their final project was to complete a one-page poster with different elements of the story, such as a summary, character traits, quotes from the book, and vocabulary words! They will give an oral presentation of their posters on Monday,
- We took a break from memoirs to write spooky stories! Students shared these on Friday as part of our Halloween celebration.
- They are continuing to brush up on their writing mechanics as well. Through dictation, spelling sentences, and writing conferences, we are making proper sentence structure a priority to create even better authors!
Math:
- The students continued working with subtraction. This week, the students had to borrow across multiple places (across zeros).
- The students are learning to tell a story about borrowing to complete a multi-digit subtraction problem.
- Also, the students worked on their math witch project. They solved multiple math tasks to build the witch’s head, body, arms, legs, and hat.
Digital Discovery:
- The students are using a new typing program through education.com, which isolates each typing row.
- Most of the students progressed to using the keys in the home row and the top row. They are moving towards knowing the bottom row, which will complete all of the letters.
- Next, the students will practice typing words, and then move on to typing complete sentences.
Character Education:
- Students worked on mindful breathing this week. They practiced different strategies to calm their breath, as well as learning when to use these strategies!
Reminders:
- Having a fully charged computer is part of each student’s daily homework. Please include charging their computer each night as part of their daily homework routine.
- With the cold weather quickly arriving this week, please help your child dress appropriately. We try to get them outside as long as it’s not raining or extremely cold to have some fresh air. We will also do our best to make sure the extra gloves, hats, jackets, etc., make their way home.
