Dear PS Families,

There is nothing better than taking some time to put aside all of the plans and just let play take over. With our week a bit shorter, we knew that the kiddos would welcome the chance to explore our classroom centers while the teachers met with each of them to play some “games” involving letters, numbers, and other basic skills. The students explored a new collection of magnetic materials, including wands, translucent cubes, colorful “gumballs”, and little figures. When given the freedom to openly explore a new item, the students quickly make discoveries through trial and error. With a metal door right next to the light table and magnets, the kiddos started to test the strength of each block and figure. Watch out though! Those little men were flying everywhere as the students tried their hand at getting them to stick flat, sideways, and even upside down! They even made their way to hanging on by one arm or leg on our lamp! They leveled up to then see how far they could make it up the door. We have plans to add to that center to enhance their new found curiosities even more. Stay tuned! Simultaneously during our center time, the students made beautiful marks using watercolors and oil pastels on large pieces of paper, scooped and molded kinetic sand, and built tiny structures on our newest piece of furniture. We slowly but surely are switching out our traditional classroom tables for pieces that are more homey. Should you have anything collecting dust at home that you would like to get rid of, we would happily accept lamps, wooden tables/end tables, baskets, other containers, and odds and ends. Just let us know!

Our recent fire explorations took us down the road to camping. We read the story, Camping Spree for Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen, a hilarious story about a camping adventure gone terribly wrong. The students giggled as the bear unhitched the camper from the car, the camper ended up going down the river, and the bear ended up saving the day because he thought the hitch was a marshmallow! We then started the conversation about what it would take to make our own PS campsite. Here is what the students thought we needed:

Sloane “Marshmallows”

Khy “Fire”

Stone “Friendly dinosaurs. They will help us wash the dishes.”

Preston “Beds.”

Alex “Sticks”

Roman “ Blankets, camper, and we need rooms and a fridge and freezer and stuff to go in a fridge and freezer. And something to survive the day. And maybe we need a dog.”

Emma “Crackers and for to take them off the stick and smooshing them. And a babydoll for my bus.”

Skye “We need marshmallows.”

Tory “Marshmallows and sticks and my mommy put my marshmallow on my stick.”

Addie “Marshmallows”

Romeo “Making smores with chocolate. We have to make real smores and pretend smores”

Luella “Stuff for dinner”

Jazzy “A big site”

 Khy “Logs”

Roman “We don’t need logs, we need chairs. And rocks to keep the fire from going out of control”

Emma “We need trees and a waterfall”

Odessa “Is the waterfall going to be real?”

Can’t you just picture it?! Our heads are swimming with ideas and we cannot wait to get started! We hope you all have a great weekend!
