Our fifth graders had a wonderful and meaningful day volunteering at the Wheeling Soup Kitchen. Students jumped right in by helping clean up common areas, sorting and organizing donations, and creating cheerful placemats—complete with hand-drawn designs and jokes—to brighten patrons’ meals. They also spent time mingling with guests, offering smiles, conversations, and kindness throughout the morning. We also took advantage of being so close to the library and popped in for a relaxing visit and a chance to unwind. It was a perfect way to balance our day of service with some quiet time. We’re incredibly proud of our students for showing such enthusiasm, empathy, and community spirit!

Language Arts:

  • Learning the art of writing a proper thank-you note to show our appreciation and gratitude to various people this Thanksgiving
  • Reviewed plural and possessive nouns and the appropriate apostrophe usage
  • Continuing our Andrew Clements literature circles to be finished next week!

Math:

  • Continuing our review of division concepts
  • Practicing long division with single-digit divisors and a dividend with decimals
  • Learned about division properties and various rules of division

Social Studies:

During Deep Dive, each Oregon Trail family made decisions on what to pack in their covered wagon. They worked collaboratively to predict what might be needed most for their trip. The children also read articles about life on the trail to familiarize themselves with the hardships the people endured in the 1850s.

Music:

The fifth-grade students have been exploring the song “Country Roads” by John Denver for the past few weeks. Not only were they singing it, but they also played it on the xylophones and drums (not perfectly)! Our final project was to create posters for their community room/ classroom area, sharing what “Country Roads” means to them. We proudly share this video to showcase each group and their ideas, as well as their amazing artwork. Enjoy!
