There’s something magical about the week of Thanksgiving. It’s the perfect opportunity to blend seasonal stories with hands-on learning. This week, we dove into a stack of Thanksgiving-themed books and paired each one with a STEM activity that brought the story to life. The result? Engaged readers, enthusiastic engineers, a whole lot of joyful learning, and a parade!!

Mrs. Mead read “The Very Stuffed Turkey,” by Katharan Kenah. This story was about a very large Turkey with a BIG problem— he was invited to multiple Thanksgiving dinners and he stuffed himself! Students were challenged to create a dinner table big enough to fit all the Thanksgiving foods. They even took it a step further and made chairs for the table!

Mr. Joe read “The Great Turkey Race,” by Steve Metzger . In this story, the turkeys decide to have a contest to see which of them Farmer Joe should pick. They all compete to win, until they find out Farmer Joe’s plans are to make the special bird a special on the dinner menu! Students were challenged to create an obstacle course with a tray, straws, and a marble. They raced their marble (aka the turkey) through the course from start to finish. Students worked collaboratively to create some awesome courses!

Mrs. Fuentes read “Balloons Over Broadway,” by Melissa Sweet. In this story, students learned of Tony Sarg, the puppeteer who invented the giant balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Students learned how the parade has evolved over the years from just animals, to balloons held up from the ground with wooden sticks, to finally balloons filled with helium that floated high for ALL to see. Along with our 3rd grade cougar buddies, students created their unique balloons. They proudly marched in place in our “reverse parade” to show off their creations. It was impossible not to smile watching many animals, a turkey, Pikachu, SANTA (of course), and so many more fun inventions raised high. We are so proud of our first-grade innovators and the joy they shared with our school. Our “Balloons Over Broadway” parade is one of our favorite First grade Thanksgiving traditions!

This short week was bursting with laughter and some pretty cool moves as we danced the afternoon away at our PJ, Popcorn, Dance party! Again, thank you for making 29 Hours such a success!

We came together before dismissal on Tuesday for our Thanksgiving Lunch. It was so wonderful to bring together our entire WCDS current students and alumni for this special lunch.

We hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving and short break!
