First Grade Fun! 🎉
This week we unlocked the secret of -ar! Our class became Word Detectives and discovered that when we see -ar at the end or middle of a word, it makes the sound /ar/ like in car! 🚗 We practiced reading and writing lots of -ar words such as car, star, jar, far, and park. Students did amazing work building words, sorting them, and using them in silly sentences!
Science Deep Dive: Animal Habitats! 🦔
We have started our newest science unit on habitats. We’re beginning with forest animals- learning where they live, how they survive, and what makes a forest habitat. The kiddos are loving exploring the world of woodland creatures! Many of these animals will be displayed throughout our rooms as we transform first grade into a winter forest!
We enjoyed another lively visit from the Ohio County Library as Mr. B read “The Cheesy Christmas book” and “McWhiskers Cuteness Explosion”:) We love to listen to wonderful books!
Our SEL lesson this week was all about self-talk and how students can tell the difference between positive and negative self-talk. Research suggests that it takes five positive interactions to make up for a single negative interaction in a relationship; the same is true of self-talk. This means we need a conscious, active process of positive self-talk in order to make up for our brains’ negative wiring. We practiced our breathing techniques and using positive language when talking to our friends!
The surprise of a SNOW DAY came early this year! Upon returning, students enjoyed a winter wonderland and had SNOW much fun playing and romping in the snow. A few friendly reminders: As the snow begins to stick, please help your child come prepared for outdoor fun and learning! To touch the snow ➡️wear mittens, to walk in the snow ➡️ wear snow boots, to play or sit in the snow ➡️ wear snow pants:)
Thanks again for allowing us to be part of your child’s learning experience! We value our partnership and look forward to seeing you all next Thursday evening!
