Our 5th graders had an amazing experience volunteering at the soup kitchen for our MLK Day of Service, and we couldn’t be more proud of them! They jumped right in and worked hard the entire time – wiping down the walls, organizing the pantry, serving food and drinks, and helping clean up the whole space. Every student showed kindness, responsibility, and a true willingness to help others, which made such a positive impact on the staff and community members we served. It was awesome to spend our time giving back, and it was a wonderful reminder that even small acts of service and the donation of our time can make a big difference!
Don’t forget to schedule a Middle School Student Shadow Day at WCDS Middle! This visit gives your child the opportunity to spend part of the day shadowing a middle school student, attending classes, meeting teachers, and experiencing a typical middle school schedule. Shadow days help students feel more confident and excited about the transition by giving them a firsthand look at what middle school life is like. If you are interested in scheduling a shadow day for your child, please reach out to Mrs. Ochap at cochap@wcdsedu.com .
On Tuesday of next week, the fifth graders will spend a portion of their morning up in the 4th grade with Mrs. Boldrick and Mrs. McFadden. The fourth graders will be spending the morning with Mrs. Wallace down in the fifth grade, so we thought it was a wonderful opportunity for our fifth graders to have class, middle school style, with some of our WCDS Middle School teachers! What do you need to do? Nothing! Just wanted to let you know.
A special congratulations to Audrey (1st), Lyric (2nd) and Ember (3rd) who placed in the statewide YWCA Martin Luther King Jr. Project on Racism Essay Contest. On Monday, they reported to Laughlin Chapel to receive their awards with the other winners from Wheeling. Congratulations, girls!
WEEKLY RECAP:
Language Arts:
- Students continued with their Literature Circle groups, spending the first 45 minutes of our mornings engaged in small group discussions
- Started to write the thesis statement for our research paper and identified our three subclaims
- This week, students completed their Winter AIMSWEB testing
Math:
- Completed their review packets and worked with teachers to prepare for their quiz
- Took their quiz on Wednesday and had chances to make corrections by Friday
- Completed their Winter AIMSWEB testing
Robotics:
- Students completed a scavenger hunt on Tuesday to help them learn and identify all the different parts of our kits
- On Wednesday, students were given their partnerships for the remainder of Robotics and worked together to create their basebot and add the sensors
- Robotics is a student-driven, problem-based learning experience. Students get minimal help from their teachers, intentionally, and are learning to lean on their partners and work together after something fails or needs rebuilt. This experience is more than just a class on coding and engineering. It is a lesson on collaboration, problem solving, communication, failing, and trying again and again. Every year, it comes with as much excitement as it does frustration, but that is the whole depth of the experience.
Spanish:
- Students have been studying the work of the famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo
- They drew pencil sketches of their own Frida Kahlo designs and made their own vibrant, large, floral headpieces as part of the traditional Tehuana dress
Drama:
- In preparation for our Forward to Fifth event next week (where Mrs. Wallace and the Admissions team present to fourth-grade parents about the wonders of WCDS 5th Grade), the students worked with Mr. Alex to make this commercial. Please enjoy! We love it!!
QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR KIDS:
- How did you do on the fraction quiz?
- Were you able to find your mistakes and make the right corrections?
- How did Aimsweb testing feel this time around?
- Who was Frida Kahlo?
- How have you and your robotics partner been working together?
- Were you able to install the sensors on your robot?
