Congratulations to our Awesome Authors Willa and Ava! We are so proud of every 4th grader who entered the Ohio County Library’s contest.

We had a couple of warmer days this week (if you consider temperatures in the 20s warmer), and we were even able to go outside to sled! The students enjoyed being able to go outside and get some fresh air! We are working hard on writing stories, reading a new and exciting book (Bunnicula) and finding success in the multiplication process.

We hope you enjoy the long weekend, and take advantage of some down time at home. We’ll see everyone on Wednesday, February 11th!

Valentine’s Exchange: We will have our Valentine’s Day card exchange the morning of Friday, February 13. The students are invited to create their own card box or we will provide a bag for their cards. Do to space constraints, please do not send card boxes in any earlier than Thursday, February 12. If you would like to send a treat in, we ask that you send wrapped treats so they may take them home (for example, a bag of pretzels, bagged apple slices, or factory packaged treats).

ELA: Students started their novel study of Bunnicula this week! They started this week by making inferences about the cover of the book by draing their own copy and annotating it with their thoughts. Students then learned some background information on vampires to build their schema for the mystery that lies ahead of them. In writing, they are finishing their creative story follwoing the guidlines of “Plot Mountain,” that focuses on rising action, climax, and resolution.

Math: This week, we are finishing up with the 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication process. We moved into multiplying 3-digits by 2-digits at the end of the week. The students are solidifying this skill! Thank you for having your child practice/memorize their multiplication facts. It is making a difference in learning the process. Next week, we start division facts and the process of long division.

Digital Discovery: Students continued to work on their typing skills as well as researching. During researching, we will begin discussing how to find factual information as well as skimming and scanning articles to find information quickly.

Character Ed: Students joined 5th graders to engage in a discussion about

Deep Dive: Government with Mrs. White

To kick off our new deep dive, students are each researching a president of their choosing. Following a guided notes booklet, students are searching for information such as their education, family, and other important information on their lives. Students will then turn their notes into a slideshow to present to the class.

A note from Mrs. Fuentes and Mrs. Shah: Several of our WCDS families will be traveling to Chile with FC Wheeling Soccer over spring break, including Miss Meredith and Mrs Fuentes, and will have the opportunity to visit a local school while they are there. As our students are learning Spanish as a foreign language, we are excited about the chance to support children in Chile who are learning English.

If you have any bilingual English/Spanish children’s books at home that you would be willing to donate, they will be shared with the school as a way to support their English language learning. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library books are often bilingual and are a wonderful option to donate!

Thank you for helping us share language, learning, and kindness beyond our classroom.

Muchas gracias!

A few reminders:

  • Students should make charging their computer part of their daily homework routine when they get home. This is part of their responsibility to come to school prepared.
  • We experienced some very cold temperatures this week, and the forecast shows more to come. We limit outside time when the temperatures drop below sub-freezing. Please send your child with a winter coat, gloves, and a hat every day. We do not allow the students to go outside without proper outerwear.
