A note from Miss Meredith: Several of our WCDS families will be traveling to Chile with FC Wheeling Soccer over spring break, including Miss Meredith and Mrs Fuentes, and will have the opportunity to visit a local school while they are there. As our students are learning Spanish as a foreign language, we are excited about the chance to support children in Chile who are learning English.
If you have any bilingual English/Spanish children’s books at home that you would be willing to donate, they will be shared with the school as a way to support their English language learning. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library books are often bilingual and are a wonderful option to donate!
Thank you for helping us share language, learning, and kindness beyond our classroom.
Muchas gracias!

“What did you learn at school?” Conversation Starters:
What is your extreme weather topic and who’s in your group?
What is an array?
What is your how-to writing piece about?
What makes a c or g soft when spelling/reading?
What was the story Mr.B, the singing librarian, read about on Friday?

What a wonderful week we had in our classroom! Between meaningful learning, teamwork, and lots of joyful moments, the kids truly shined (as always!). Here’s a peek at what we’ve been working on this week:

📖 Phonics: This week we focused on the soft c and soft g spelling rule. Students practiced identifying when c and g make their soft sounds and applied the rule through reading, sorting, and spelling activities. We’re seeing lots of “aha!” moments as they grow more confident with this pattern.

➕ Math: We explored arrays and repeated addition. Students worked on connecting equal groups to addition sentences and began to see how arrays help organize and represent math thinking in a visual way. This skill will also lead them right into a new, more complex skill… multiplication!

📝 Grammar: We dove into sentence types- statements, questions, commands, and exclamations, while also practicing what makes a sentence complete and properly written. Students enjoyed identifying sentence types and experimenting with punctuation in their own writings.

✏️ Writing: We officially wrapped up our How-To writings this week. While they were challenging initially, these instructors turned out to be great authors. Now we’re able to make smores, cereal, tie our shoes, and many more tasks with ease! Next week, we are excited to begin letter writing, where students will learn how to structure and purposefully write letters.

🌪️ Deep Dive: Our Extreme Weather groups have been hard at work! Students collaborated to research and share information about their topics, including tornadoes, avalanches, hurricanes, tsunamis, floods, earthquakes, droughts, wildfires, blizzards, and thunderstorms. We’ve already seen some fantastic presentations and can’t wait for the remaining groups to share with the class next week!

🎶 Special Activity: We had a special visit from Mr. B, the singing librarian! As always, the kids loved his energy, music, and the wonderful book he shared with a strong and meaningful message that you can be whatever you want to be when you grow up!!

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We are so proud of these students and the curiosity, effort, and kindness they bring into our classroom each day!

See ya next Wednesday!
