ELA: Bunnicula is a vampire! Or is he? Our novel study ended with the students left to draw their own conclusions. While many were convinced he was a vampire, there were still some who just couldn’t believe it. Ask which side your student took! They are now completing detailed artistic one-pagers that sum up the novel in a creative yet rigorous way. Their writings are also based on this novel, as they wrote predictions, summaries, and their own alternate ending to the book! Next week, they will take a reading test based on this novel. It will be open-book and open-note.

Math: The students worked on basic division facts, which they should know with quick recall and accuracy (just like their multiplication facts). They are understanding what division is, and learned about dividend, divisor, and quotient. We also did a deep review of the multi-digit multiplication process. Next week, we will review subtraction, multiplication, and division facts, in preparation for learning the long division process.

Digital Discovery: This week, the students were shown a slide show and they had to critique and suggest improvements for this presentation. They are learning about layout, conveying the information in an organized manner, and including elements (pictures, graphics) that are relevant to their topic.

Character Ed: Students spent some time with their 2nd Grade Cougar Buddies to brainstorm ways to spread kindness in honor of Random Acts of Kindness. The group also watched a short video where a random act of kindness created a domino effect that has lasted for years. Ask your student what their random act of kindness will be.

Government Deep Dive with Mrs. White: Students are now working on their slide shows for their President research project. We are discussing ways to find the most accurate research as well as being good presenters. Stay tuned to hear how they do next week on Wednesday when they begin presenting!

A note from Mrs. Fuentes and Mrs. Shah: Several of our WCDS families will be traveling to Chile with FC Wheeling Soccer over spring break, including Miss Meredith and Mrs. Fuentes, and will have the opportunity to visit a local school while they are there. As our students are learning Spanish as a foreign language, we are excited about the chance to support children in Chile who are learning English.

If you have any bilingual English/Spanish children’s books at home that you would be willing to donate, they will be shared with the school as a way to support their English language learning. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library books are often bilingual and are a wonderful option to donate!

Thank you for helping us share language, learning, and kindness beyond our classroom.

Muchas gracias!

A Few Reminders:

  • Please remember to pack a healthy morning snack for your child. We’ve noticed that some students are eating part of their lunch during snack time, which leaves them with less food for lunch later in the day.
  • You may see a math book go home for homework. This is your child’s assigned math book. They are responsible for bringing it home and back to school when needed.
  • With the temperatures fluctuating from cold to warm and back to cold, we are finding coats, jackets, and sweatshirts left behind. Please LABEL all of your child’s clothing for easy identification of each item.
